Staff Psychologist/Coordinator of QPR Program

The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Northwestern University (NU) is searching for a Staff Psychologist to provide various clinical services as well as to coordinate the department suicide prevention program, Question-Persuade-Refer (QPR). This is a newly formed full-time 12 month position. The staff psychologist will conduct psychological evaluations and provide brief therapy in individual and/or group settings for NU students, and provide crisis intervention, consultation, and outreach and educational programming to the NU community. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Outreach and Education, the staff psychologist will coordinate the department QPR suicide prevention program. Also, the position will supervise graduate trainees in psychology. Evening hours will be required.
CAPS is a dynamic unit within the Division of Student Affairs at NU and is highly utilized by students and other campus community members seeking consultations. CAPS staff are highly cohesive, collegial and passionate about working with students. In addition, the staff highly value strengths-based leadership and partnering with other campus constituents to meet the needs of our students. CAPS has offices on both the Evanston and Chicago campuses and, approximately 12% of the student body (approximately 17,000 students across both campuses) accesses our clinical services each year. In addition, we reach another 5000 campus community members through outreach and educational programming. CAPS also has an extensive training program, including a Post-Doctoral Fellowship, a Pre-Doctoral Internship in Psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association, and a practicum program. CAPS is a learning organization, in that our strategic planning, priority setting, clinical and other services, and professional development are informed by local data collection as well as benchmarking with national trends and peer institutions. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
a. Conduct psychological evaluations and provide short-term therapy in individual and group settings for Northwestern students.
b. Provide intakes, crisis management, triage, daytime walk-in emergency service, and assume after-hours on-call responsibilities for daytime and evening emergency services.
c. Maintain clinical records and necessary statistics of psychotherapeutic and other client contacts in Titanium Electronic Record System.
d. Consult with psychiatrists in conjunction with prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medication for psychotherapy patients.
e. Consult with parents, physicians, faculty, academic deans, residence life staff, off-campus counseling services, other campus offices and students, when appropriate, and with appropriate authorization in order to provide quality care to students.
f. Make referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, or hospitals, when appropriate.
g. Supervise and participate in training experiences for masters and doctoral level graduate trainees. Provide case management and consultation to trainees, as assigned. Provide crisis management supervision to trainees, as requested.
OUTREACH AND EDUCATION PROGRAMMING:
h. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Outreach and Education, coordinate and evaluate the center suicide prevention program, QPR. This will include, but not be limited to, scheduling QPR trainings for the campus community on both Evanston and Chicago campuses, recruiting QPR presenters, training new QPR presenters, maintaining the QPR site on the department website, tracking and reporting on QPR data (e..g, number of campus constituents trained, various demographics variables etc ), and partnering with Student Affairs Marketing to promote and advertise the QPR program.
i. Conduct other outreach and educational programming, as requested, including QPR trainings, other firesides, orientation sessions for new students and parents, workshop presentations and emergency support services to the campus community.
j. Attend and participate in regular CAPS staff meetings, case conferences, and in-service training.
k. Participates in Student Affairs and other university committees, as assigned by the Executive Director, an/or Assistant Director of Outreach and Education.
1. Hold a completed doctoral level degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-accredited academic program or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired;
2. Completion of a pre-doctoral internship at an APA accredited site;
3. Licensed or license-eligible (post-doctoral hours must be completed prior to start date) in the State of Illinois.
4. Previous experience working in a comprehensive university counseling center
5. Demonstrated experience partnering effectively and collegially on an inter-disciplinary team in a university counseling center and Student Affairs.
1. Previous experience coordinating a suicide prevention program on a college campus.
2. Experience with and commitment to social justice issues and working with diverse clients, including individuals from ethnically racially diverse backgrounds individuals representing varying sexual orientations, and individuals of varying sizes.
3. Knowledge and experience with cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder; and substance abuse assessment and treatment
