CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The City University of New York (CUNY) seeks an experienced higher education mental health and wellness professional to fill the crucial role of University Director for Mental Health and Wellness to proactively develop, integrate and oversee comprehensive programs, services, education and support resources for the physical, mental and emotional well-being needs of our students across 24 college campuses. As a member of the Vice Chancellor’s Senior Management Team, the University Director will create and implement minimum standards and ’best practices’ for health promotion, activities, policies, and procedures affecting health and counseling center operations, and adapt CAS, IACS, and other national standards for use across all campuses. Charged with advancing the University’s commitment to student academic success, wellness and mental health risk management, the University Director will be responsible for three key wellness areas (Counseling Services, Health Services, and Health Promotion/Wellness) as well as seeking external funding to support CUNY’s Mental Health and Wellness initiatives. Working in collaborative partnership with each college, its health and counseling centers, the Central Administrative Office, and external community health organizations, the University Director will promote and manage mental and general health care services, programs, targeted outreach and education, and assessment. The position reports to the Deputy to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
Other duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
- Construct and implement an integrative University-wide health and mental health program review system, assessment measures, metrics, and quality indicators for evaluating effectiveness and utilization, and assist campuses with doing the same.
- Conduct regular health, mental health, and public health needs assessments of CUNY students.
- Co-direct the ’Healthy CUNY’ initiative with various university and campus based administrators and faculty members to implement allied policies and research and evaluate students’ health needs.
- Develop strategic partnerships with City, State and private institutions including the mental health and medical community in New York City and state health departments to leverage resources.
- Serve as a university advocate for and consultant to all campus-based health and mental health directors, service providers, faculty, administrators and staff on clinical issues and crisis situations.
- Participate in establishing guidelines and best practices for campuses regarding crisis response and the use of Behavioral Intervention Teams.
- Assist campuses and the General Counsel’s Office with using the Medical Withdrawal Policy.
- Negotiate with health insurance providers to procure optimal health insurance plans for all students, and oversee the coordination with the Office of Citywide Health Insurance Access (OCHIA) and insurance carriers to ensure the access and promotion of low-cost insurance options.
- Partner with the New York Blood Center and the University community to coordinate blood drives.
- Oversee a professional development training series for mental health and health services, and facilitate or implement educational workshops that train faculty, staff, and students in recognizing students of concerns, responding to crisis, and making referrals to the Counseling Center.
- Coordinate and oversee the Clinical Psychology Fellows Program.
- Lead, facilitate and/or participate on various standing and ad hoc department and inter-campus based planning and policy-making committees, councils, task forces and/or meetings, such as Risk Management Insurance and Infectious Disease Sub-Committees, Health Services, Counseling Center Director’s, Judicial Affairs Officers, and Chief Student Affairs Administrators Councils.
- Represent the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs on the NYS Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Statewide College Consortia Steering Committee.
- Prepare long- and short- range plans, operating procedures and budgets; monitor, evaluate, and report on programmatic and operational performance related to goals, and recommend improvements
Bachelor’s degree and eight years’ related experience required.
The successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Master’s degree in psychology, mental health and wellness, personal or psychological counseling, or directly related discipline required
- Current NYS licensure as a Mental Health Counselor or Practitioner required
- Eight years relevant experience required, including at least three years of experience as a director, assistant director, or administrator in a college or university health or counseling center required
- Doctoral degree in an appropriate discipline for personal or psychological counseling strongly preferred
- Experience managing public health and student health insurance concerns, and developing, implementing and promoting health and wellness programs for diverse urban college students
- Experience administering a college or university health center or similar medical or psychological practice, including supervisory and financial/budget management responsibilities
- Knowledge of nationally recognized professional, accreditation or certification standards, plus federal and state regulations relevant to health and mental health services
- Active membership or involvement in professional organizations for student or public health services
- Ability to respond sympathetically to students and maintain the confidentiality of health information
- Conflict resolution, mediation, negotiation, presentation and group facilitation skills
- Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with diverse members of the university community and external constituents in a large centralized public university system
- Detail oriented with strong analytical, evaluation, research, writing and editing skills
- Computer proficiency using standard office software programs/applications
