Position Description
Christopher Newport University’s Office of Counseling Services seeks staff psychologists for two full-time positions to provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, educational outreach programs, and consultation with faculty and staff. Though these positions are primarily a clinical service delivery position, the successful candidates will also provide after hours on-call support, consulting, psycho-educational programming, including seminars and workshops to address preventative and developmental needs of students, and will also support student success and student engagement in the residence hall and classroom through appropriate programs and services. The candidates may also provide training supervision as needed. The Office of Counseling Services works collaboratively with many offices within the University and Division of Student Affairs, and as such, each staff member contributes to accomplishing the office and division objectives.

Minimum Qualifications
Required qualifications include an earned doctorate by August 1, 2013 in clinical or counseling psychology or a related discipline, including coursework and/or appropriate training in individual and group counseling, psychological assessment, theories of personality, abnormal psychology or psychopathology, standards of ethical practice, and substance abuse prevention. The successful candidates must have experience and knowledge in providing individual or group counseling; experience in crisis counseling and intervention to include on-call status and emergency hospitalization procedures; and excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong abilities in counseling and outreach programming are also required.

Desired Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience providing individual and group counseling in a college/university setting; experience in providing counseling and prevention services; experience in providing training programs for resident advisors and Greek populations; experience in behavioral management techniques to assist students experiencing difficulty adjusting to the University environment; knowledge of principles of consultation; knowledge of student development; ability to plan, manage, and administer concurrent programs meeting a variety of needs; and knowledge about counseling special populations such as those who are at-risk for suicide or victims of sexual assault and substance abuse; and skills in training program management and supervision.
