Position Description
The Director of Counseling Services is responsible for the administration, coordination, and operation of the University Counseling Center; recruitment, training, supervision, development, and evaluation of counseling and support staff personnel, maintaining compliance with accreditation standards; enhancing and implementing a Quality Improvement process; providing counseling services, crisis intervention, and outreach services for students; providing information and outreach programs to students, faculty, and staff in accordance with the mission of the University, Student Affairs, and the Health and Counseling Services Department; participating on the Health and Counseling Services Management Team; monitoring clinical productivity and providing feedback to counselors and the Director of Health and Counseling Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Doctorate in Psychology, Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology or related field.

Three years of experience as a University Counseling Center Director or other significant administrative or managerial experience in a mental health care setting and five years total as a professional staff member in a mental health setting.


Licensed psychologist with a minimum of five years counseling experience.

Hold or be eligible for State of California certification as a Licensed Psychologist within twelve months of employment.

Required Qualifications / Specialized Skills Knowledge of relevant legal and ethical, requirements for Counseling Services and mental health professionals.

Understanding the administrative and legal complexities associated with administration of a counseling center.

Experience in developing and implementing preventative mental health outreach programming.

Demonstrated current competence in clinical techniques, supervision, crisis assessment and intervention.

Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities, and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems.

Ability to apply quality management techniques of continuous improvement and employee involvement to assess and improve services, promote a positive department culture and build teams.

Ability to complete multiple assigned tasks, plus departmental emergencies or last minute assignments in a timely manner.

Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in organizational and management practices.

Knowledge of management principles

Must possess a genuine interest in working with health providers.

Demonstrated ability to evaluate and function under complex or stressful work situations, such as handling interpersonal conflict..

Ability and commitment to address diversity and multicultural issues in a university setting.

Ability to assess and prioritize departmental needs and resources

Ability to understand basic budget presentations and processes.

Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn current standards of practice for University Counseling Services; demonstrated skills in collaborative leadership and the ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with faculty, staff, and students outside the Department.

Experience in mentoring, evaluating, and managing staff.

Ability to monitor staff schedules for efficiency and productivity.

Experience presenting to groups or in a teaching setting.

Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.

Strong conflict management skills and ability to solve problems, set goals, negotiate compromise, settle personality differences, and resolve conflicts.

Knowledge of Quality Improvement techniques relevant to Counseling Services’ functions.

Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.

Desired Qualifications
Experience serving as a director or coordinator of higher education counseling services.

Experience providing counseling services/programs at an institution of higher education.

Clinical supervision experience.

Demonstrated experience in crisis intervention and issues related to college student populations.

Comprehensive vision understanding of counseling services role in a university setting.

Demonstrated knowledge of utilization of electronic health record.
