Position Title
Director of Counseling and Psychological Services

Princeton University

University Health Services

Salary Range

Position Description
Princeton University seeks an experienced and innovative mental health leader to serve as Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) at University Health Services (UHS). The Director provides leadership, clinical, and managerial expertise to a strong college mental health team of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, postdoctoral fellows, and administrative staff. CPS offers a broad array of services, including urgent care and crisis intervention; individual, couples, and group psychotherapies; psychopharmacological consultations and initial maintenance; campus liaison, outreach, and mental health education; as well as community referral services.

Princeton University’s health care program is guided by an integrated model. Within this collaborative organizational structure, CPS functions as UHS’ mental health unit, with the Director of CPS reporting to UHS’ Executive Director. This approach affords the opportunity for considerable collaboration between CPS and other UHS providers in a variety of interdisciplinary programs designed to provide holistic care to the Princeton community. CPS is recognized for the superb quality of mental health care provided by its clinical staff and is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS) and Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare (AAAHC).

Success in this position requires a visionary mental health leader who can effectively balance the growing demand for mental health services; the increasing need for systematic measurement of clinical trends and outcomes; full engagement in cross-service, integrated care within UHS; as well as campus outreach and education to students and staff partners. The Director will ensure CPS’ capacity to continue providing exemplary care while meeting increasingly complex compliance and confidentiality requirements, and managing the demand for increased collaboration. In addition to the Director’s leadership role within CPS, s/he will be an accessible, engaged partner to leaders across UHS, in campus life, academic affairs, and public safety, and will play an important role in crisis management for the Princeton community.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will bring a doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology, medicine (with Board certification in psychiatry), or social work; licensure to practice in his or her current state jurisdiction and license eligibility in the state of New Jersey; at least 7 years’ post-doctoral clinical experience, 5 years’ clinical-administrative/leadership experience, and/or progressively responsible, relevant experience; and a minimum of 5 years’ full-time supervisory experience of professional staff.

Desired Qualifications
An MBA, MHA, MPH or comparable advanced degree highly desirable. Significant expertise in current and emerging college-age mental health issues with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with college-age populations, international students, parents, faculty, and college administrators strongly preferred. Proven talent for collaboration and team-building, and the ability to maintain effective, trusting working relationships of mutual respect and honesty are essential.
