Staff Psychologist (Student-Atrhlete Expertise)

The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at Northwestern University is searching for a Staff Psychologist, with a particular expertise/professional background in working with student-athletes. This is a newly formed full-time 12 month position. CAPS is a dynamic unit within the Division of Student Affairs at NU and is highly utilized by students and other campus community members seeking consultations. The staff psychologist will conduct psychological evaluations and provide brief therapy in individual and group settings for Northwestern students, and provide crisis intervention, consultation and psychological programming to the Northwestern community. Also supervises graduate trainees in psychology. Some evening hours will be required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conducts psychological evaluations and provides short-term therapy in individual and group settings for Northwestern students;
• Provides intakes, crisis management, triage, daytime walk-in emergency service, and assumes after-hours on-call responsibilities for daytime and evening emergency services;
• Provides mental health services to student-athletes;
• Maintains clinical records and necessary statistics of psychotherapeutic and other client contacts;
• Consults with psychiatrists in conjunction with prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medication for psychotherapy patients;
• Consults with NU Department of Athletics and Recreation (NUDAR) personnel, parents, physicians, faculty, academic deans, residence life staff, off-campus counseling services, other campus offices and students, when appropriate, and with appropriate authorization in order to provide quality care to students;
• Makes referrals to off-campus therapists, clinics, or hospitals, when appropriate;
• Partners with the Health Services, Athletic Department, and other appropriate systems to maintain a clinical team to coordinate health care for student-athletes;
• Supervises and participates in training experiences for masters and doctoral level graduate trainees;
• Provides case management and consultation to trainees, as assigned;
• Provides crisis management supervision to trainees, as requested;
• Conducts peak performance learning programs and other performance and sports related psycho-educational programs for student-athletes;
• Conducts other outreach and educational programming, as requested, including firesides, orientation sessions for new students and parents, workshop presentations and emergency support services to the campus community;
• Attends and participates in regular CAPS staff meetings, case conferences, and in-service training;
• Serves as a member of the Wellness Committee of the NUDAR and serves as CAPS liaison to NUDAR;
• Participates in Student Affairs and other university committees, as assigned by the Executive Director;
• Performs related duties as required or assigned.
1. Hold a completed doctoral level degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA-accredited academic program or the equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired;
2. Completion of a pre-doctoral internship at an APA accredited site;
3. Licensed or license-eligible (post-doctoral hours must be completed prior to start date) in the State of Illinois.
1. Credential as a sport psychologist through a professional organization;
2. Experience with and commitment to working with diverse clients, including individuals from ethnically racially diverse backgrounds individuals representing varying sexual orientations, and individuals of varying sizes;
3. Knowledge and experience with cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder; and substance abuse assessment and treatment;
4. Experience providing sport performance enhancement services to individuals and teams.
