Positions in Counseling Centers

Position Title
Postdoctoral Trainee

University
Moorpark College

Department
Student Health Center

Salary Range
$15 per hour

Position Description
Moorpark College Student Health Services is accepting applications for post-doctoral training providing psychological counseling services within a community college health center setting. This is a nine month position, running from August 14, 2013 through May 19, 2014. We anticipate having either one full-time, five day per week position or two half-time positions, depending on applicants and fit.

The primary service provided by trainees is brief individual therapy; possible activities include psycho-educational/support groups, outreach, health education, and guest lecturing. Past postdocs have collaborated with faculty and college staff on student success skills training and developed/implemented secondary prevention groups for at-risk populations, e.g., student veterans and nursing students. Trainees will become familiar with screening for AD/HD and other conditions commonly occurring in a young adult population. Family therapy, work with children, and psychological testing are not part of our services.

Clinical supervision integrates cognitive-behavioral, problem-solving, somatic, neuro-cognitive, and other approaches as appropriate. Trainees who complete the year without any significant absences will meet all requirements for the 1500 hours of post-doctoral Supervised Professional Experience (SPE) necessary for licensure in California. It is the trainee’s responsibility to determine whether this training will meet the criteria for licensure in other states, as some states require more than 1500 hours of SPE and may have additional regulations.

Student Health Services is a small multi-disciplinary setting; our staff includes nurses, a nurse practitioner, a physician and a psychologist. At times, the Student Health Center resembles a community medical and mental health clinic with regard to the range of patients’ presenting problems, diagnoses and acuity. The staff is supportive and collegial, making for a comfortable working environment.

Psychological counseling services are much in demand, necessitating a fairly high pace of work. Approximately 70% of the trainee’s time is devoted to direct service. The psychological counseling staff also provides consultation and training to faculty and staff regarding distressed students and crisis intervention.

Minimum Qualifications
A completed doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology, or an equivalent psychology degree from an APA accredited program will be given preference. Applicants who are ABD will be considered, as will those from non-APA programs. However, a trainee starting ABD cannot be assured of completing 1500 hours within the year. Applicants from non-APA programs can expect to provide additional documentation of their coursework, training and clinical skills.

Significant prior experience providing individual therapy to adults is essential, as is a strong interest in brief therapy. Case management skills or the willingness to learn those skills are necessary.

Desired Qualifications
Previous experience in a college/university counseling center is an asset, as is experience in crisis intervention.
