The incumbent will serve as a member of the Counseling Center Leadership Team and will assist in creating and implementing the Center’s vision and achieving the Center’s goals.
Advise and support the Executive Director in the day-to-day operations of the center. Serve as Acting Director in the Executive Director’s absence. Serve as the Executive Director’s designee on assigned committees, crisis response, and consultation when the Executive Director is not available. Assist the Executive Director in conducting staff retreats and other training opportunities. Assist the Executive Director in the implementation of technology to improve delivery of service, utilization tracking, and promotion of all Counseling Center services and activities. Assist the Executive Director in assessment activities related to program effectiveness, clinical outcomes, and accreditation efforts. Provide administrative and clinical supervision of staff, as needed, to assure the ethical delivery of all counseling services in accordance with federal and state guidelines and professional ethics codes. Provide direct clinical services to students in the form of individual, couples, and group therapy, crisis intervention, and outreach presentations. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Doctoral degree in Psychology. Four years of experience in a college/university counseling center. License eligible in the State of Texas, and able to obtain a clinical license within the first year of employment. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.
Readiness to work during non-office hours and maintain increased flexibility as critical incidents occur. Ability to perform essential duties under stressful situations. Advocacy of multicultural and diversity issues in counseling, and evidence of commitment to ongoing development of multicultural competency. Demonstrated commitment to clinical work, outreach, training, and wellness, and integration of developmental perspective in all these endeavors. Demonstrated leadership experience and program coordination skills. Dedication to work as a team. Ability to manage conflict and to communicate well during problem-solving.
Sam Houston State University is a rapidly growing institution that has a current enrollment of approximately 18,500 students. It is located in Huntsville, TX, a small city of 34,500 residents between Houston and Dallas. The SHSU Counseling Center is a rapidly growing department, with a commitment from the university for continued growth in the future. To that end, the student body recently voted to provide funds for a new Student Counseling & Health Center. This facility will break ground in the spring of ’13 and should take approximately one year to complete. Once opened, the Counseling Center will be able to expand the depth and breadth of its services in a variety of exciting ways.
Although it is only 70 miles from downtown Houston, Huntsville is surrounded by forests, lakes and ranch lands. Huntsville State Park and Sam Houston National Forest are both nearby. Each year, visitors from all over the state come to Huntsville, home and burial place of General Sam Houston, "Texas’ Greatest Hero," and the General Sam Houston Folk Festival. Huntsville’s "Fair on the Square" offers a day of fun, shopping, and food in its historic downtown area. Downtown is home to antique stores, galleries, shops and museums.
