Position Description
The Associate Director for Alcohol & Other Drug (AOD) Programs and Services will provide leadership and assist in the strategic planning of University programs and initiatives directed at substance abuse prevention and risk reduction. The successful candidate will serve as chair of the AOD Steering Committee and work with the AOD Education and Initiatives Committee to forward a comprehensive, evidence-based campus wide program directed at prevention and intervention strategies. This position will also provide oversight for the development and continued administration of a BASICS program on campus.

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Associate Director for AOD Programs and Services will develop collaborations with academic faculty working in the area of substance abuse and serve as the campus liaison with the greater Binghamton community when addressing issues related to substance abuse. Some program development and delivery is expected for student and staff groups. Evening and weekend hours may be required.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Work with campus constituents to develop and articulate a University vision and consistent messages regarding student alcohol and drug use

Provide leadership in the strategic planning of University programs and initiatives directed at AOD prevention and risk reduction

Chair the AOD Steering Committee

Work collaboratively with programming entities on campus to increase outreach and awareness, and support prevention and risk reduction activities

Develop and implement group-specific trainings to students and staff, and advise student groups on prevention strategies in planning events

Develop and provide oversight to a BASICS program on campus

Assist in collecting and analyzing population-based assessment data related to substance abuse; participate in the evaluation of educational and outreach initiatives
Serve as an expert resource to students and staff
Serve on University committees that are responsible for developing student policies and programs, particularly those focused on AOD-related issues

Create AOD-related documents and administrative reports as directed

Collaborate and coordinate with campus, community and national partners to address high-risk behavior and prevention initiatives on campus, including opportunities for research

Coordinate activities to secure AOD funding for projects and extended services, as directed, as opportunities arise

Minimum Qualifications
Masterís degree in mental health, social work, student affairs, health education, higher education or related field

Demonstrated knowledge of AOD prevention research and best practices, preferably with respect to the developmental tasks unique to the college-age cohort and campus community setting

Demonstrated leadership ability

Demonstrated effectiveness in collaborating across departments, agencies and institutional systems

Flexibility and ability to manage complex roles and processes within a dynamic work environment

Proven record of successful educational outreach and program delivery

Excellent organizational, communication, collaboration, consensus-building and interpersonal skills

Strong work ethic, team oriented and "user-friendly" to all constituents

Desired Qualifications
Experience in a university or college counseling center setting

Advanced skill and experience in assessment and program evaluation

Multi-cultural competence, with knowledge and skills to work with diverse populations and develop culturally sensitive programming

Experience addressing public health issues in order to impact the culture of a community

Experience with motivational interviewing programs (i.e. BASICS)

Experience in supervising graduate assistants, interns and/or peer educators
