Position Description
Conduct individual, couple, and group counseling, perform psychological assessments, provide workshops and other outreach programs to the university community, consult with faculty, staff, parents and students regarding mental health issues, provide crisis intervention coverage, some evening coverage, and other specific duties as needed. Supervise graduate students in psychology or counseling programs. This is advanced professional work which may require the development of new or improved techniques and procedures with some latitude for independent action and decision. Performs other related duties as assigned.

This is a post doctoral internship position, lasting one year. The incumbent will receive appropriate supervision towards fulfillment of post degree hours needed for licensure.

Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral Degree in Counseling/Clinical Psychology or related field, preferably from an accredited program. No post doctoral or post degree experience required. Experience working in a college or university counseling center setting would be helpful.

Desired Qualifications
Demonstrated commitment and competency to work in a university counseling center environment with a broad range of students, including first generation college students and those students coming from traditionally underserved populations.

Sam Houston State University is a rapidly growing institution that has a current enrollment of approximately 18,500 students. It is located in Huntsville, TX, a small city of 34,500 residents between Houston and Dallas. Because of its proximity to two major metropolitan areas,SHSU’s student body is rich in all aspects of diversity.

The SHSU Counseling Center is a rapidly growing department, with a commitment from the university for continued growth in the future. To that end, the student body recently voted to provide funds for a new Student Counseling & Health Center. This facility will break ground in the spring of ’13 and should take approximately one year to complete. Once opened, the Counseling Center will be able to expand the depth and breadth of its services in a variety of exciting ways.

Region Description
Although it is only 70 miles from downtown Houston, Huntsville is surrounded by forests, lakes and ranch lands. Huntsville State Park and Sam Houston National Forest are both nearby. Each year, visitors from all over the state come to Huntsville, home and burial place of General Sam Houston, "Texas’ Greatest Hero," and the General Sam Houston Folk Festival. Huntsville’s "Fair on the Square" offers a day of fun, shopping, and food in its historic downtown area. Downtown is home to antique stores, galleries, shops and museums.
