Position Description
The Post-doctoral Counselor Fellow position at SSU is a full-time, 10 month, 40 hour per week position designed to meet all requirement for the 1500 hours of post-doctoral Supervised Professional Experience (SPE) necessary for licensure as a Psychologist in California.
The Post-doctoral Counselor Fellow will provide short-term (10 session limit) individual counseling, as well as intake assessments, crisis intervention, outreach services, and psycho-educational workshops.
Post-doctoral Counselors are provided with 2 hours of individual supervision and 1 hour of group case conference. Post-doctoral Counselors typically carry a large, diverse caseload of individual clients and may have the opportunity to provide couples and group counseling as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
Thorough knowledge and understanding of professional counseling theory, research, practice and methods and adherence to approved professional, legal and ethical standards of the counseling profession
Completed doctorate in counseling or clinical psychology from an accredited institution
Excellent clinical and interpersonal skills
Strong oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated clinical skills in individual and group settings using short-term treatment approaches
Demonstrated sensitivity in working with a diverse multi-cultural population of adults and young adults
Demonstrated ability to: establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with peers and clinical supervisors; use clinical supervision to ensure service quality and adherence to legal and ethical mandates; and make effective presentations
Developing ability to: plan, develop, and lead effective workshops; utilize case conceptualization and management, treatment planning, and clinical interventions to facilitate clinical effectiveness and/or referrals appropriate to the presenting problems and needs of the client
Ability to write clear and concise case notes.
Understanding and adherence to legal guidelines and APA Ethics
College counseling center experience
Desired Qualifications
Completion of APA-accredited internship
Crisis intervention experience
Clinical experience working with severe and chronic mental health issues
Experience conducting outreach presentations

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is a Student Affairs unit of the division of Academic Affairs at Sonoma State University. CAPS offers confidential counseling to students experiencing personal problems that interfere with their academic progress, career or well-being.
