Position Description
POSITION PURPOSE: The Counselor in this position is responsible for providing individual counseling to students with personal, developmental, and educational concerns. The counselor is expected to provide crisis intervention, educational outreach programs, and assessment and referral services. The professional in this position will provide consultation to university and college administrators, faculty, staff, campus organizations, and parents. This is a nine-month position (August 15 through May 15), 40 hours per week. The professional in this position reports to the Director of Counseling Services and is a member of the Student Life team.

Essential Job Functions:

Provides brief individual psychotherapy to enrolled students.
Provides or determines long-term therapy plan needs for individual special cases.
Develops and maintains relationships with community agencies for student referral.
Provides crisis intervention and assists with the management of crisis situations according to Crisis Manual procedures. Assists with follow-up support for the campus community, providing services as needed.
Markets Counseling Services to the campus community
Provides consultation to university administrators, faculty, staff, student organizations, and parents.
Conducts educational, outreach, and/or training programming for the campus community.

Minimum Qualifications
Essential Job Requirements:

Education and Experience:

Minimum Masters degree in social work, counseling or clinical psychology.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to interact verbally in person, over telephone and via written and electronic media.

Desired Qualifications
Must have current Illinois license for practice in the field.
Demonstrated experience with developmental short-term models of counseling and working with diverse populations required.
Experience in a higher education environment and/or with adults and young adults preferred.
Interest and experience in outreach programming, as well as in the treatment of substance abuse, eating disorders and/or self-injury preferred.

Skills:

Must have strong skills in initial clinical assessment and in crisis intervention.
Strong organizational and administrative skills required.
