The Associate Director of the Counseling Center provides administrative oversight and management for the Counseling Service division of the Counseling Center in the provision of psychological and career counseling, crisis intervention, consultation and outreach services that enable students to develop life strategies for success. The Associate Director reports directly to the Director and works closely with the Center Director and Administrative Team. The Administrative Team is comprised of Assistant Directors from the Learning Assistance Service, Disability Support Service, and the Testing and Research Unit.
The successful candidate is a generalist licensed psychologist with an extensive background in the provision of psychological and career counseling (individual/group/couples) and demonstrated leadership experience in a university counseling center. The Associate Director provides supervision of 12 professional staff, 4 doctoral interns, externs, practicum students, temporary part-time staff, a graduate assistant and Center receptionist. The Associate Director supervises and works closely with the Training Director and Clinical Director in the Counseling Service. Conducts periodic performance reviews with staff and establishes the Counseling Service’s goals and priorities. Other Duties and Responsibilities: Responds to emergencies; coordinates crisis intervention; maintains clinical records; provides consultation with key University stakeholders; provides supportive leadership to the Counseling Service’s committees; leads weekly staff meetings; and serves on Center and Student Affairs Committees including the Behavior Evaluation and Threat Assessment Team (BETA). Provides direct service to help-seekers including intakes, individual counseling and group counseling. The Associate Director is familiar with electronic record keeping systems, and collects and maintains data related to service delivery, assists in the completion of the Center’s annual report and conducts program evaluation and follow-up studies. The Associate Director is responsible for managing the Center with Assistant Directors during the Director’s absence, and carrying out other duties as assigned. The successful candidate for this position is involved in scientific research on psychological development, adjustment, personality development, career development and direct service provision for publication in refereed journals, and conducts presentations at national and regional conferences and institutes.
Doctoral degree in Counseling or Clinical Psychology. Successful completion of an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited internship. Licensed psychologist eligible to practice psychology in the State of Maryland. Extensive experience in a college or university counseling center.
Five years or more of administrative leadership experience in a counseling center setting.

The University of Maryland Counseling Center
Established in 1937, the University of Maryland Counseling Center, within the Division of Student Affairs, is the primary campus agency responsible for the provision of emotional, social, educational and career counseling and disability support services. It serves a diverse University community of over 36,000 students and more than 4,000 members of the faculty and staff. The Center employs a staff of 58, which includes 29 professional staff, 6 support staff, 4 doctoral interns and several graduate assistants. The Counseling Center is comprised of four divisions, which includes the: (1) Counseling Service; (2) Learning Assistance Service; (3) Disability Support Service; and (4) the Testing and Research Unit. The Counseling Center is accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS), and holds American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation for its Intern Training Program.
