Job Description
The Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs will provide overall supervision and management of the wellness units in such areas as budget, personnel, programs and procedures. This position is responsible for the management of programs and services that enhance physical and emotional wellness to positively impact student engagement and retention. This position supervises the following areas: Counseling and Testing, Pohl Recreation Center and Recreational Sports, and Student Health and Wellness Center. The Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs.
List of Key Activities:
*Develop strategic goals and objectives for the oversight departments, which support and promote the goals of the division and University
*Provide direct supervision, training and evaluation of programs and staff in all oversight units: Counseling and Testing (Director), Pohl Recreation Center & Recreation Sports (Director), Student Health and Wellness Center (Director) and an Administrative Assistant
*Demonstrate fiscal responsibility in adhering to fiscal parameters and established guidelines in the administration of the approved budget
*Develop and oversee wellness initiatives and outreach for students
*Oversee policy development, resources and education for wellness initiatives
*Oversee the research, strategic planning and assessment and evaluation of programs within the areas of responsibility
*Collaborate with other campus constituencies to promote wellness and student growth and learning
*Maintain high visibility within the campus community, particularly with students
*Serve on University committees, councils and other individual assignments as assigned
*Provide programs and services that contribute to student persistence and graduation
*Attend and participate in local, state, regional, or national meetings relevant to the field of student affairs, as appropriate
*Serve within related professional associations when workload and opportunities permits
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Student Personnel, Higher Education, or a closely related field and ten years of closely related professional experience. Medical degree from an accredited medical school or doctoral degree strongly preferred.

*Extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate)
*Demonstrated leadership and supervision skills of large and diverse professional and support staff in Student Affairs
*Extensive knowledge of Texas rules and regulations related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate)
*Experience and knowledge relating to professionally and effectively counseling and mentoring students
*Extensive knowledge of student development theory and issues related to college students
*Commitment to diversity, collaborative environments and teamwork
*Ability to show initiative and productivity in work environment
*Experience with teambuilding and mentoring staff and staff development
*Strong organizational, analytical, planning and budgeting skills
*Must exercise considerable independent and professional judgment in matters of significance
*Willingness to implement proactive programs and student services to benefit all students
*Strong presentation skills
*Strong problem solving skills
*Strong critical thinking skills
*Strong project management skills
*Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing
