Position Description
Serves as the chief mental health officer on campus and oversees the management of the Student Counseling Center’s
administrative, operational, and financial
responsibilities; oversees the day to day operations of a multi-disciplinary team of mental health professionals, testing specialists, trainees, and support staff; ensures the Center provides exceptional clinical services, supportive testing/evaluative services, outreach programming, and consultation to faculty, staff, and the
University community; maintains a working relationship with Student Health Services to coordinate services as needed; serves as adjunct faculty in the College of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry to supervise residents rotating through the Counseling Center’s Psychiatric Clinic; supervises staff to include assigning duties, checking work, handling
disciplinary issues, approving time off, signing time sheets, and preparing performance evaluations, oversees a 24 hour
on-call counseling service with the University Police Department; serves on the University’s Behavioral Assessment
Team; maintains working relationships with regional mental health professionals to coordinate referrals and services;
ensures patient confidentiality; follows applicable university, state and federal regulations; regular and prompt
attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required; related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
A doctoral degree in Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, or a related field from an accredited
institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, five years of clinical and administrative
experience in a supervisory capacity at a college or university counseling center, and licensure, within one year of employment, with the appropriate mental health professional licensing board in the state of Alabama.
Current state of Alabama license with the appropriate licensing board is preferred.
Certification with the National Board for Certified Counselors (NCC) or the American Board of Professional Psychology(ABPP) is preferred.
Strong diagnostic skills, knowledge of psychological crisis intervention and management, comprehension of
psychological trends on college campuses and familiarity with legal issues related to directing a college counseling
center are required. Knowledge of application of "best practices" in a college mental health setting and in evidencedbased approaches to therapy are required. Candidates must also have experience in college teaching, budget management and long range planning.
