Position Description
The SIU Carbondale Counseling Center is seeking a psychologist for a 12-month, continuous, entry-level position, beginning August 1, 2012. The Counseling Center maintains an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship and provides comprehensive mental health services to diverse students of a large state university. Staff provides individual, group, couples, and crisis counseling; community intervention and social justice activities; and supervises practicum students and interns.

Minimum Qualifications
Earned doctorate in an APA-accredited program in Counseling or Clinical Psychology (ABD applications accepted; degree must be completed by September 30, 2012 or contract will be converted to term position), completion of APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship in professional psychology, and eligibility for registration as a licensed psychologist in Illinois.

Desired Qualifications
Preferences: Strong clinical skills, multicultural competence, and significant experience in at least one of the following areas of focus: group therapy, couples therapy, outreach/community intervention, trauma, DBT.

University Description
The Counseling Center is located on the beautiful campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The University has a total enrollment of about 20,000 students and offers a large selection of graduate and undergraduate majors, including professional schools of law and medicine. The Department of Psychology offers APA-accredited programs in both counseling and clinical psychology. The student body is diverse: about a quarter of the undergraduate students and about 14% of graduate and professional students are American minorities or international students. The University ranks fourth among the country’s traditionally white institutions in the total number of undergraduate diplomas awarded to black students.

Region Description
Carbondale is located 96 miles southeast of St. Louis and within a half-day’s drive of several major Midwestern(Chicago, Indianapolis)and Southern cities (Memphis, Louisville, Nashville). Carbondale has about 30,000 residents and is surrounded by rolling hills, beautiful lakes, and deciduous forests. The environment provides plentiful locally grown food, fruit orchards, and wine trails. The history of the region is well preserved in the many small towns in our area. Carbondale borders the Shawnee National Forest, whose cliffs, forests, lakes, and parks offer abundant opportunities to enjoy outdoor life.
