Position Description
Primary duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: conducting psychiatric evaluations and crisis interventions; monitoring psychoactive medications; conducting and or overseeing mandated evaluations, consultations, medical withdrawal evaluations, psychotherapy and family meetings; serving as coordinator of all care routine and emergency at the CAPS department; case consultation with other SMU departments particularly the Dean of Student Life office, Residence Life and Student Housing, Law School and Legal Affairs; overseeing the CAPS department consisting of full time and part time psychologists, pre and post doctoral interns and fellows and administrative staff; strategic planning and direction for CAPS staff; working closely with other health care providers in the Health Center and community providing care to students; and outreach and consulting to the campus community.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree is required. Board accredited psychiatric residency training program is required. Board Certification in Psychiatry is strongly preferred. A minimum of three years work experience as a clinical psychiatrist is required.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in a college counseling center is strongly preferred. Texas licenses or license eligible to practice medicine with appropriate registration in Texas is required. Clinical knowledge and expertise in crisis management, collaboration with psychologists, suicide prevention, psychopharmacology and substance abuse and dependence is essential. Candidates must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to work with diverse individuals/groups. Must also demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in writing. Candidates must possess basic computer skills and knowledge of MS Office products. Must also possess the ability to learn new computer applications quickly. Candidates must possess strong organizational and time management skills to effectively handle multiple tasks and prioritize. Candidates must have a strong commitment to a high standard of confidentiality and discretion, as the person in this role will be called on to handle confidential information with discretion.

Southern Methodist University, founded in 1911 by the United Methodist Church, has an enrollment of approximately 11,000 students. Located 5 miles north of downtown Dallas within the city of University Park, SMU has strong links to the community at large and offers convenient accessibility to the Dallas metroplex.
