OTOHNS Department Resources
Excellent computer facilities are available within the OTOHNS
Department. The outpatient clinic employs the state-of-the-art
Centricity (GE) Electronic Medical Records system which also links
laboratory result access as well as a computer accessed Radiology
(PACS) system to streamline care. The University provides a PDA
to each incoming resident to track duty hours and clinical data.
The KUMC computer network assists all members of the Department
and Medical Center by providing e-mail, internet access and access
to library literature databases, etc. Both state of the art Macintosh
and PC-based computers are available for resident use. Applications
programs including word processing, spreadsheets, statistical analysis,
reference retrieval, and document and figure scanning are available.
Facilities for image analysis and graphics are supplemented by
extensive multi-media facilities, including a large format poster
printer in the MRRC.
The newly renovated Departmental library is near the clinic area
and is composed of recent textbooks and bound OTOHNS journals.
This is supplemented by the comprehensive KUMC Dykes Library located
adjacent to the medical center; which has undergone a recent renovation
with new computer-based search, student testing and classroom teaching
capabilities. Both the VAMC and CMH also have libraries on site
for resident and faculty use.
The OTOHNS residents have a resident room within the Department
with desks, phones, stereo and computers. The OTOHNS call room
is located on OTOHNS Ward 53. Ward 53 also has a stocked OTOHNS
treatment room to perform inpatient consultation exams and procedures,
thus, minimizing the need to transport the patient to the outpatient
clinic area. This room is equipped with a microscope and endoscopes.
A transportable COBRA endoscopy and exam cart is available for
ICU consultations and exams.
The University of Kansas Medical Center Department of OTOHNS
outpatient clinic has eight clinic exam rooms, two procedure rooms
fitted with microscopes, endoscopes, and video towers, a facial
plastics suite and a minor operating room. In August 2005, a significant
expansion of the clinic to the floor below will be available. Separate
adjacent audiology, vestibular laboratory and voice laboratories
are used for patient evaluation and treatments as well. This is
staffed with several nurses, a physician’s assistant and
a patient care coordinator. The clinic facilities are adjacent
to the Department academic offices, Departmental Library and Conference
rooms. The clinic building is connected directly to the University
of Kansas Medical Center. The other affiliated hospitals (CMH,
VAMC, TMC, and SLMC) also have well-staffed, state-of-the-art facilities
to carry out the assigned clinical duties.
