Description of OTOHNS Training

Integrated OTOHNS-Surgery Internship (Post Graduate Year 1)

PGY-1 residents in the University of Kansas OTOHNS Residency Program complete one-year of training in an integrated OTOHNS-Surgery internship under the overall supervision of Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program Director. The PGY-1 residents rotate at the University of Kansas School of Medicine (1 resident - KUMC, Kansas City, Kansas) or at the University of Missouri School of Medicine (2 residents - St. Luke's and Truman Medical Centers, Kansas City, Missouri). This integrated training includes rotations on neurosurgery, anesthesia, emergency medicine, surgical ICU, general surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery and/or other pertinent surgical sub-specialty fields. Rotations on the OTOHNS Team for 1 to 3 months are also incorporated into this year. During this year, residents attend departmental and divisional conferences and make application to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery for membership.

Residents in the first year of training are intimately involved in the pre- and post-operative care of their patients, make daily inpatient ward rounds and perform simpler surgical procedures under supervision as well as participate as assistants in more major operations. In this manner, they gain training in surgical technique, pre- and post-operative care and the management of the very ill patient with significant fluid and electrolyte disturbances, including those who require surgical intensive care unit observation. Multidisciplinary management of the major trauma victim is also learned.
