Sub-Specialty Training in OTOHNS
VIII Medical Missions
The Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation has
active medical missions in Mexico, Guatemala, Philippines,
Nepal and the former Soviet Republic of
Kyrgyzstan. The project in Kyrgyzstan is a campus wide health program
funded by U.S. AID through the American International Health Alliance.
In the Kyrgyzstan project, Head and Neck Cancer surgeons, as well
as Radiation Oncologists and other health professionals involved
in the care of Head and Neck Cancer patients, have come for visits
to our institution. Department chief residents frequently accompany
faculty on these mission trips.
Our department also maintains a close relationship with the Tribhuvan
University teaching hospital in Kathmandu
, Nepal. Dr. Hoover began
this relationship during the period between 1978 to 1980, when
he served as the American Peace Corp physician and otolaryngology
consultant to the teaching hospital, Bir Government Hospital, in
Katmandu. Dr. Hoover also served at the Edmund Hillary Hospital
in Kunde, Nepal, near Mt. Everest. Throughout the years, Dr. Hoover
has continued this relationship with periodic trips to the country
and donations of medical equipment. As a result of these donations,
the first endoscopic sinus surgery performed in Nepal was under
Dr. Hoover’s supervision.
