Resident Lifestyle
There are multiple lifestyle and educational benefits of the
OTOHNS residency at the University of Kansas. The resident receives
a competitive salary including annual raises and cost of living
increases, as well as health and disability insurance. As a Midwest
City, Kansas City offers a relatively low cost of living. This
is evidenced by the fact that all current residents own a home.
The incoming residents receive the two-volume Bailey's textbook,
enrollment in the OTOHNS Academy's Home Study Course (PGY-3 and
-4 years only) and subscriptions to Archives of Otolaryngology-Head
and Neck Surgery and Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. Also
provided are white coats, KUMC parking, medical licenses, and a
head mirror. The home call rotation, established monthly by the
administrative chief resident, averages five to six nights per
month covering all the institutions. Both KUMC and VAMC OTOHNS
services have cellular phones for on-call use.
The Department of OTOHNS encourages and funds research and clinical
presentations at national meetings. In addition, the residents
attend the Annual Kansas City Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology
Society meeting. The PGY-5 chief residents also attend the national
OTOHNS Academy meeting in September. Finally, the residents and
staff make an annual pilgrimage to the Departmental Winter Competency
Conference (except PGY-3 residents).
