Sub-Specialty Training in OTOHNS
II Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
The training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery has
multiple facets at KUMC. All residents attend the annual Hard Tissue
(maxillofacial trauma and repair) course. These are supplemented
by didactic lectures given by the Facial Plastic and Reconstructive
Surgery Faculty.
An extensive training experience in maxillofacial trauma complements
an active facial cosmetic surgery experience. The maxillofacial
trauma experience includes endoscopic fracture repair techniques.
Trauma call alternates on a daily basis with Plastic Surgery. Dr.
Kriet has a burgeoning facial plastic practice covering all aspects
of facial aesthetic surgery including techniques such as endoscopic
browlift, laser, microdermabrasion and chemical exfoliation surgery.
This is complemented with an aesthetic minor surgery suite, photography
suite and aesthetic nurse. The Head and Neck Reconstruction Team
performs over 70-80 microvascular free flaps annually, in addition
to a large number of local and regional flap procedures for both
minor and major head and neck defects. A microvascular animal laboratory
is available for resident training in microvascular techniques.
In addition to procedures performed in the main operating room,
a minor procedure suite is located within the Department Clinic
for elective cosmetic procedures and smaller soft tissue procedures.
This training is supplemented by similar cosmetic and reconstructive
procedures performed by the same attending staff at the VAMC and
KUMedWest Ambulatory Surgery Center.
