On June 6, 2009 the Department’s Alumni golf tournament was held at the Deer Creek Golf Club. In an effort to raise money for the Debra Park Resident Research Fund, the format grew to a 48 person best-ball scramble with a shot gun start; thus, allowing all groups to enjoy their round of golf in a relatively timely fashion. The weather cooperated and provided a beautiful day for golf. Thanks to a concentrated effort and many generous supporters we raised $17,200 for the Debra L. Park Fund which is a joint fund shared between the Departments of Hearing and Speech and Otolaryngology Head and Neck surgery. Everyone was in agreement that this format was a positive change and will be carried forward for next year’s event. The Department would like to thank all of those who supported the Debra Park Fund and this event.

This year’s Alumni Day was marked with many special presentations and celebrations. The overall theme featured women in the field of Otolaryngology, and was chosen as a special tribute to Dr. Jacquelyne Holdcraft who is retiring after a long association with the Department. One of her early career achievements consisted of being the first female resident in our program and now she is concluding her career as one of our beloved faculty members.
In order to pay tribute to Dr. Holdcraft, Dr. Girod decided to add an additional guest speaker to this year’s program. The Department was honored to have both Dr. Karen H. Calhoun, from the Ohio State University, and Dr. Debara L. Tucci, from Duke University, share the podium as guest speakers. Dr. Calhoun gave two talks: the first, on “Sublingual Immunotherapy: Starting Up” and the second on “Women and the Evolution of Medicine”. Dr. Tucci also presented two talks: the first on, “Global Hearing Health: Experiences in India” and the second on, “Women in Otolaryngology: Recent Trends”. After reviewing all resident presentations, both Drs. collaborated in choosing this year’s Resident awards winners for both the Debra Park award, received by Dr. Cristina Cabrera, and for the Sythes educational research award, received by Dr. Shannon Kraft.
The evening festivities consisted of a reception and dinner at the Boulevard Brewing Company for 150 plus guests, hosted by Dr. Girod. This year, the after dinner program celebrated two special tributes: the first, a tribute to Dr. Jacquelyne Holdcraft for her years of association with the Department and, secondly, the Investiture of the W.S. and E. C. Jones Chair in Cranio Facial Reconstruction, awarded to Dr. J. David Kriet. Dr. Kriet is now the fourth endowed professor for the Department.
Other awards include the Department’s outstanding teaching award, which went to Dr. David Garnett, as well as Resident Book awards for Drs. Cabrera, Wemer, Kraft & Swisher and the Jacquelyne Holdcraft Chief Resident awards which went to Dr. Gaines and Dr. Siller. The Program concluded with the recognition of residency completion for Dr, Cristina Cabrera, Dr. Peter Gochee and Dr. Richard Wemer. The Department also honored the graduation of its first Fellow in Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Jeffrey Jorgensen.
April 22, 2009
On the evening of April 22nd, 2009 the Department Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery presented an educational community outreach program entitled “Otolaryngology 2009”. With an audience of over 140 guests, composed of healthcare professionals, grateful patients, and community leaders, Chairman Douglas A. Girod presented an overview of the Department, starting with our faculty credentials and accomplishments and moving on to outline the highlights of our clinical, research and educational programs. This presentation identified new benchmarks for the department, illustrating growth in both physical size and national rankings. The presentation also provided the opportunity for our external audience to gain a better understanding of the department’s geographic areas of clinical practice, the number of patients seen on an annual basis and the achievements of our resident training program.
The program then provided breakout sessions in the following areas:
Guests were able to attend these specialized presentations on their areas of interest and meet one on one with the faculty presenters to further address their questions.
The program concluded with tours of the new Kansas Life Sciences Institute Research Facilities highlighted by tours of Dr. Hinrich Staecker and Dr. Dianne Durham’s research labs and presentations related to their new NIH and DOD funded research projects on the Development of atonal therapy for bilateral vestibular hypofunction and the Investigation of the rat model for Tinnitus respectively.
February 25, 2009
On February 25, 2009 the creation of an advancement board for the Department of Otolaryngology came to fruition. The Charter members include Alumni Dr. Oscar Pinsker and Dr. Mike Franklin, Julie Veatch, Steve Patton, Jari Buck, Pat Gaunce, and Dr. David Zamierowski. This group was established due to a variety of interests and associations to the department, ranging from resident education to grateful patient appreciation. Under the direction of our Chairman, Dr. Doug Girod, they have agreed to take on the task of furthering the mission and goals of our Department. Thus far, their involvement has been instrumental in the success of our "Otolaryngology 2009" community reception, the Debra Park golf tournament and our Alumni Resident Appeal. We welcome their support and are extremely grateful for their efforts as they continue to work as mini ambassadors for the department, promoting all aspects of our clinical, research and educational programs.
