The Orthopedic X-ray and Indications Conference occurs each Tuesday at 7:00 a.m. All cases at the university hospital are presented, as well as selected ones from the Veterans Administration Medical Center. Imaging studies from the previous week's surgeries are presented, and the cases are discussed, emphasizing diagnosis, indications for treatment, and possible alternative treatments.

The Basic Science and Clinical Core Lecture Series is presented each Wednesday at 6:30 a.m. This is a two-year curriculum, which exposes each resident to all aspects of basic science and clinical aspects related to orthopedic surgery. The vast resources of the University of Kansas Medical Center, including the basic science departments, are utilized to provide a wide variety of speakers presenting topics in such areas an endocrinology, pathology, radiology, rheumatology, infectious disease, and bone and mineral metabolism. Suggested readings are provided, and the conferences consist of clinical cases and didactic lectures.

Each summer the anatomy module is given, and eleven anatomical regions are discussed, stressing surgical anatomy and exposures. There is a weekly lecture, and a subsequent one to two hour dissection is performed. Residents do the dissections and surgical exposures.

There is a monthly Journal Club meeting at which time The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery is discussed. Additionally, there is a specialty journal club, which meets once a month, rotating among the various specialties in orthopedics. This conference addresses selected topics of orthopedic pediatrics, sports medicine, arthroscopy, foot and ankle, spine, hand surgery, and surgical oncology.

A Tumor Conference each Monday afternoon avails itself of the expertise of the departments of radiology, pathology, medical oncology, as well as orthopedics. Specialty conferences are held each week to review upcoming surgical cases for the week as well as follow-up on previous surgeries done. These include the Adult Reconstruction Conference held each Monday morning, Spine Conference held each Thursday morning, and Hand and Upper Extremity conference held each Friday afternoon.
The Department of Orthopedics sponsors the Peltier Lectureship, which underwrites the visit of a nationally recognized orthopedic expert. The Department pays the expenses of residents attending a variety of conferences and meetings. During the PGY-1 through 3 years residents attend the basic AO fracture and internal fixation course, and also AAOS arthroscopy courses.

PGY-4 year residents are allowed to choose their conference. PGY-5 year residents attend the annual American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meeting, as well as one orthopedic review course. The Department of Orthopedics funds all the expenses of residents who present papers at regional and national meetings.

Resident evaluation and feed-back are considered important elements of the training program at the University of Kansas Medical Center. After each rotation residents receive written and oral assessments of their progress by the attending staff. In addition, there is a yearly evaluation with each resident, the program director, and one member of the attending staff.

Residents are encouraged to provide feedback during their training, including a written assessment of each rotation. The results are carefully studied and used to strengthen the residency program.

The University of Kansas Medical Center Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program has the goal of graduating knowledgeable, skilled, and ethical orthopedic surgeons. This goal continues to be achieved each year. The superb facilities, teaching staff, and curriculum are integral to this impressive tradition, but the residents themselves become one reason for the success of the training program. Residents are important as individuals whose skills and needs are identified and addressed and also as members of a close-knit team working together on their path toward graduation.
