Premedical Orthopedic Research Fellowship

Research fellowship award granted to a premedical student interested in orthopedics and orthopedic research. Work is done in either the Biomechanics and Bioengineering Labs or the Harrington Molecular Biology Lab. Funding is through the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

M. Kareem Shaath
B.A.: Microbiology, Minor: Arabic Language, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS
Current Projects: Kareem will be a first year medical student.  He is working in the laboratory of Dr. Jinxi Wang.  He is exploring the molecular and cellular mechanisms for the development of osteoarthritis.  He is also studying the mechanisms of bone sialoprotein-elicited osteogenesis and its application in bone regeneration.

Summer Research Training Program for Medical Students

Under this program, medical students spend the summer between their first and second year of medical school participating in research projects, while gaining hands on research experience. These projects are performed under the direction of and in collaboration with the orthopedic surgery faculty. Many medical students continue to participate in research throughout the year.

Zack Zimmerman
B.A.: Human Biology, University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS
Current Projects: Zack is part of the Summer Research Training Program (SRTP) and is being advised by Dr. McIff in the Orthopedic Research Center. Zack is currently developing a technique for applying negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) scaffold on wound surfaces.
Uzo Amandi Jake Petrosky
B.Sc: Biochemistry, Wichita State University, Wichita, KS
Current Projects: Jake is part of the Summer Research Training Program (SRPT) and is currently assisting the Orthopedic residents during their research rotations with an ongoing project to develop a clinically viable, alternative therapy, for human patients that are treated for critical bone defects by autograft harvested from the ileum.
Mark Wolffe Ryan Farmer
B.Sc.: Civil Engineering, Minor in Geology Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS
Current Projects: Ryan is part of the Summer Research Training Program (SRPT) and because of his background in mechanical engineering he is being adviced by Dr. McIff in the Orthopedic Research Center (ORC). Ryan is currently testing the initial mechanical stability of the mayo conservative total hip stem.

Undergraduate Orthopedic Internship

This position is for students needing to complete an internship as a requirement for an undergraduate degree. The ORC is glad to provide these students with that hands on learning experience they will need to prepare themselves for graduate studies.

jiverson Elizabeth Leimer
Major: Biomedical Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY
Current Projects: Elizabeth is working on a bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering. Her focus will be on the scapholunate ligament and the damage caused by torsion, along with assisting all research at the ORC and becoming familiar with orthopedic research.

Orthopedic Surgery Post-Sophomore Fellowship

Research fellowship award granted to a medical student after the sophomore year who is interested in a career as an orthopedic clinician-scientist. This student works on one or two projects in the Biomechanics Lab, the Harrington Molecular Biology Lab or both. Funding is through the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Research Fellows

As a department of the School of Medicine, we support and integrate the research of graduate students from several disciplines. We have recently collaborated in and supported the research of PhD and Master's level graduate engineering students emphasizing biomechanics and other bioengineering specifically related to orthopedics. We have also recently had a Postdoctoral Fellow with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering working in our labs.
