Rural Health Weekend
The Rural Health Weekend is organized by the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Office of Medical Education, and encourages second-year medical students to familiarize themselves with the day-to-day work of rural family doctors, and engage in community envolvement. The weekend is much like a mini-preceptorship as students explore community involvement and discover for themselves if rural medicine is a good fit.
Working with a rural doctor can be an extraordinary experience. Even if you are not planning a career in a rural location, the one-on-one interaction with a doctor as they serve the community is an exciting and rewarding way to spend one weekend during medical school.
The annual Rural Health Weekend for second-year medical students takes place in the fall. The medical student will join the physician in his or her office or clinic, go on hospital rounds, and take part in other aspects of rural life. The physician/community will provide food and accommodations. The School of Medicine will reimburse students for travel to and from the community.
