KU’s Rural Track Option

The rural track is an option for students who want a rural experience for an extended period of time in their third and fourth years.

At this time, four students are accepted for the rural tract each year.

Those students:

  1. must be in good standing academically.
  2. complete their first six months of clinics in either Kansas City or Wichita.  The rotations taken the first six months are surgery, medicine, and neuro-psych (taken in no particular order.)
  3. move to Salina in late December and provide their own housing.
  4. take the rest of the required third year clerkships in Salina – pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, family medicine, ambulatory care/geriatrics.
  5. take Health of the Public, rural rotation, and an elective in Salina or nearby.
  6. have the option of taking all fourth year electives and requirements in Salina.
  7. receive their didactics primarily through readings, video tapes, ITV, and small group instruction.

Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency Program has a close relationship with the Rural Track. Students have full use of the computers, books, etc., at Smoky Hill.  Smoky Hill faculty and residents are closely involved with students even when the student is on a specialty rotation.
