Health Careers Pathways Program, K-12 Programs

1. Summer Science Residential Academy, KU Campus: 30-50 high school students

Academic, medical internship, pro-social, cultural competency enrichment

  • 90 hours of integrated science, math, language arts instruction
    Note: All Academy instruction is approved for district standards in science and math, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. A multicultural staff reflects the student population.
  • 40 hours of PSAT, PACT and WordSmart college entrance exam preparation through Princeton Review
  • 15 hours Multicultural Event Preparation and Presentation at KUMC
  • 20 hours of medical internships – KUMC, Swope Health Center, Northeast Animal Hospital
  • Computer, printer, home installed, student family in-home training, 3 years help desk
  • Poetry workshops and presentation at Lawrence Cafe

2. Saturday Science and Math Academy High School/Middle School, Kansas City, Kansas Community College Campus: 60 high school freshmen and sophomores, 60 seventh and 8 th grade students per school year

Academic, pro-social development (time management, team building, positive talk, relationship engagement through mentoring), cultural competency enrichment

  • 100 hour of integrated science, math and language arts instruction through applied learning
    Note: All Academy curriculum is district approved for math and science, middle and high school, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. A multicultural staff reflects the student population of Kansas City, Kansas.
  • Meet the Science Mentor takes place through Science Pioneers in a Metro-wide event strengthening the students’ ties to the science community and offering assistance on research topic discussions. Mentor Day at Saturday Science Academy involves 15 science mentors from the KUMC student, faculty, research and physician community. Students share their project methodology with KUMC mentors, who critique projects in progress.
  • 20 hours of language arts through poetry and creative writing and presentation
    (multicultural poetry is shared throughout school year. Guest poets are invited from the community.
  • 10 hours of team building components developed to acquaint students with each other and staff, share personal culture, prepare students and staff to work together in small group research projects

MIDDLE SCHOOL GRAPH ANAYSIS:

The Posttests results show a percent increase in all the areas tested. Area of interest “Multiplication of Polynomials” (questions 13- 16) and “Factoring of Polynomials” (questions 17-20). Other areas such as “Integer Operations” and “Solving Equations” were also improved as expected since the Pretests showed a strong percentage of correct answers.

HIGH SCHOOL GRAPH ANALYSIS:

Posttests results show that the major areas of improvement were “Graphing Concepts” (questions 6-7), Chemical Concepts (questions 8-9), Cell Biology (questions 10-11), “Experiment Concepts” (17-19). The most significant area of interest was “Biology of the Heart” and the Brain” (questions 26-30).

Students are notified of college entrance exam registration dates, community science programs, multicultural events, tutoring opportunities, etc.

Qualified Saturday Science Academy students are given the first pick acceptance into Summer Science Residential Academy on the KU Campus.

Kansas City, Kansas Community College offers 3 full scholarships per year that includes tuition, books and fees for qualified Summer Science Academy students.

3. Youth Leadership and Development Corps: 30 high school students

Youth Leadership and Development Corps students are provided opportunities to build leadership skills through educational apprentice and mentoring opportunities. YLDC students spend 20 hours in training sessions prior to co-facilitating projects with program specialists for younger students during the KIDZONE Extended Day, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. Programs include areas that are important on District assessment tests. Students earn a stipend and are provided transportation for their educational work. The programs offered are Organic Gardening, Video Technology, Poetry and Creative Writing and Medical Internships: 30 high school students

  • Organic Gardening: YLDC students work with garden specialist to implement workshop that build, maintain and educate students, school staff and families on organic gardens. Serves 1000 elementary and middle school students through 135 raised garden beds at 7 elementary and middle schools in Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools.
    Note: Twenty-one Garden Workshops are district standards approved for science in elementary and middle schools in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools.

  • Video Technology: YLDC students work with film specialist using I-Movie software, Mac Editing computers and DV Cameras. Film workshops include the YLDC Media Monday Cable show Broadcast at KCKCC and KIDZONE workshops. Adult specialists and YLDC students work on animated films, PSA topics, e.g., Elder Care, Avoiding Dog Bites, Avoiding Sun Skin Damage and sci-fi short films. (130 students)

Video Technology Extended Day

  • EnvironMental: Students at Argentine, Central and Rosedale Middle School are provided and integrated classroom experience enhancing their science/math curriculum using the a professional artist-mentor as facilitator of interactive EnvironMental workshops. Using interactive arts as the medium, students are brought to a new awareness of environmental concerns. The district science/math teacher co-facilitates the workshop with the artist mentor.
    Note:All curriculum adaptation is district standards approved. (50 students)

Students in the EnvironMental Program create a Leadopoloy board game and use recycled materials to study Geology. Creating environmental films are also part of curriculum.

  • Urban Transcendence Poetry: Poetry, creative writing and performance workshops are provided to KIDZONE/Project Discovery Extended Day students, Integrated Classroom High Schools and Saturday Science and Math Academies. A Guest Poet in Residence provides facilitation, mentoring and performance opportunities for all participating students. Students have performed at the Governor’s Arts Award Ceremony, SBC African American Heritage Month Celebration, Declaration of Independence Unveiling Ceremony at Union Station, Culture Under Fire, Just Off Broadway and Starlight Theatre. YLDC poets and Storytellers Inc. drummers performed for Dr. Maulana Karenga in Topeka, Kansas celebrating Kwanzaa. 1000 Urban Transcendence Poetry Anthology magazines are published yearly for students and community members.
    Note: Curriculum is district standards approved for language arts, elementary, middle and high school in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools.

Urban Transcendence Poetry

  • Medical Internships: Youth Leadership and Development Corps students are provided the opportunity to serve in medical internships 3 hours per week during the school year. JayDoc Free Clinic and Swope Health Center offer internships in Family Practice, Radiology, Human Resources, Medical Language Translation, Pharmacy, Research, Physical Therapy and Pediatrics.
