Department of Neurology  :  Residency  :  About Us

Greetings

From the Chair

The Department of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center is the perfect place to choose for your neurology training. Our nationally and internationally recognized faculty are dedicated to resident education and the career development of our graduates. Our well-designed conference schedules combined with our teaching hospitals and clinic services provide a fertile ground for the development of neurologists.

We are located in a beautiful Midwestern city, listed as one of the best and most affordable places to live in the United States. Our School of Medicine celebrated its centennial in 2004. When you visit our campus, you will notice the recent expansions with the addition of a new floor on the hospital with a dedicated Neurological Intensive Care Unit, step down unit, and neurology ward, all located on the sixth floor. The campus also has a new six-story Heart Hospital and the Kansas Life Sciences research building.

From the Program Director

Welcome to our residency program. Established in 1959 and continuously accredited since then, our program has a long history of providing excellent training in neurology. Our faculty includes 47 neurologists, pediatric neurologists, and basic scientists at four hospitals and at the Hoglund Brain Imaging Center. They are each dedicated to research and to patient care.

Starting in academic year 2009-2010, our program becomes a four-year integrated program. The program number in the NRMP is used to match all four years of training. While our residents rotate through the University of Kansas Hospital and the Topeka VMAC during their categorical internship, no separate interview is needed for the PGY1 year.

Adult neurology training is conducted at the University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City and Leavenworth VAMC, and Truman Medical Center (Kansas City, Missouri). Pediatric neurology training is conducted at Children's Mercy Hospital (Kansas City, Missouri). Each year, we match four adult neurology residents. They are joined in their training by pediatric fellows from our affiliated program at Children's Mercy Hospital.

I invite you to learn more about our residency program by contacting Paula Mengel, our Senior Education Coordinator, at 913.588.6996 or by email at pmengel@kumc.edu.
