October 2001

  • Celebrate National Nurse Midwifery week, October 1-7, 2001! A wonderful addition has been added to the ACNM website, www.midwife.org. A week-long calendar discussing midwifery is both comprehensive and well illustrated. Think about the roots of midwifery, and where the profession is moving toward in this new century. How can you share the information you are learning with other women and health care professionals that provide similar health care services? In order to grow this profession and the consumer desire for midwives, marketing, public education, and awareness of the CNM role is critical. Make a personal pledge this month that you will share with someone you don't know very well a few facts about the midwifery profession and provide resources for them to "read more about it".
  • The Greater Kansas City Chapter of the ACNM, Chapter V-18 is holding a regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 3rd, 6:00 (networking), 6:30, meeting at the Classic Cup in Westport. Focused planning on the upcoming March 2002 conference is underway. Featured speakers include Helen Varney Burst (author of midwifery text and KU Nursing School Alumni) and Dr. Thomas Strong, both authors and supporters of the profession of midwifery. Join the chapter, you will find ways to work with many CNM's in the community, learn more about the profession, and have fun!
  • On September 25th the seven students in Class 02 joined graduates of Class 01, preceptors, and faculty for a blessing of the hands. A circle of sharing concluded with lighting of sage and candles, and a blessing with oil on the hands of the current students by a midwife. We know that a potluck is the way to go, wonderful food, sharing of stories, and just being together was a great opportunity for everyone to leave the classroom and relax.
  • As most of you are aware, our first accreditation site visit will be in February 2002. We are sending out by e-mail each criterion for student review and input. Please provide comments or ask questions related to the materials you are receiving.
  • KUMC midwifery faculty practice is moving closer each week. We are beginning negotiations with the KU OB department and KUPI, the physician organization, for time-sharing clinic space and to begin a practice. Our faculty goal is that this will be underway by January 2002.
