- The consultant for our bistate nurse midwifery education program, Nancy Moss, CNM, PhD, will be visiting us in December, 2001 for a “mock” walk through site visit to assist in formal preparation for our ACNM Division of Accreditation site visitors in February 2002. Dr. Moss will meet with nurse midwifery students on Wednesday, December 12 at 1:30 in the afternoon, location to be decided. If you are a student in the midwifery program, either taking core masters courses or current clinical midwifery courses, we invite you to place this date on your calendar and try to attend. Your input into our accreditation is very important!
- Chapter V-18, Greater Kansas City Chapter, of the ACNM is planning the 7th annual conference to be held March 1 and 2 here at KUMC School of Nursing. Confirmed speakers include Helen Varney Burst and Dr. Thomas Strong, both authors and outspoken supporters of nurse midwifery education and practice in the United States. A variety of expert faculty will present various clinical, professional, and research topics for the break out sessions. We want all nurse midwifery students to be involved in this conference and attend. Put these dates down so you can plan ahead now.
- The 27th Annual Women’s Health Care Symposium sponsored by KU is being held May 9 and 10th, Thursday and Friday. Keynote Presentation is Sharon Schnare, CNM, FNP on gynecological issues. Optional Thursday evening activities include IUD and Endometrial biopsy skills training. This is a fabulous conference for all of you to attend, and coincides well with women’s health being offered in the Spring Semester. Please consider attending this conference as well.
- The national ACNM conference is in Atlanta, Georgia in 2002 the last week of May 24th - 30th. This is an exciting opportunity for students in all areas of current study to attend the national professional organizations annual meeting. You will see midwifery come alive and learn much about your future career as well as develop new friends and contacts throughout the U.S. MANY opportunities are available to reduce some costs of attending as a student. Watch the ACNM webpage http://www.midwife.org beginning in December/January for announcements for students.
- Scholarships are available for graduate students from the March of Dimes National Organization and also ACNM Foundation. Check the national website for information. Deadlines for applications vary and have been posted a few weeks.
- And a final note, I finally completed and successfully defended my doctoral dissertation on October 26th. Graduation is December 15! Hopefully all of my head and energy is back to concentrate on family, life, and work. Thanks to everyone for your support, and confidence in my finishing along the way.
