March 2001

Region V-18 Annual Conference: The annual conference for Region V-18 ACNM chapter was held March 2 and 3, 2001 at the KU School of Nursing new building. Over 130 registrants and faculty participated in the sixth annual event. Many of our midwifery students were present and participated in the conference events. Congratulations to midwifery students Heidi Wade, Kelly Fritz and Cathy Gordon who were three of the five recipients of the local chapter student nurse midwife scholarships!

Congratulations to Annette VanAnne, SNM who was selected as one of ten Wyeth Ayerst national student reporters for the annual ACNM convention in Washington D.C., June 1 to 7, 2001. Annette will receive $1,000 to attend the national conference and serve as a student reporter for events and business sessions conducted at this meeting. She will also write an article for publication, and present her experience to a forum upon returning from convention.

National Convention: It's not too late to register to attend the ACNM convention. Look on the website www.midwife.org for information and registration. To date the following SNMs are attending: Barb Parker, Annette VanAnne, Jeane Schroeder, and Sherry Payne. Consider sharing a room and decreasing your costs. If you're in the Antepartum course this summer, your faculty will be gone, so you will have some extra work to do if you are not attending the conference!

Second Midwifery Class: The Summer 2001 class has been formally completed and includes the following students who will start the Antepartum course this summer: Jeane Schroeder, Karen Mull, Suzanne Bentley, Ann Wright (WSU), Kelly Fritz, Cathy Gordon, and Samantha Petersen (UMKC). We are very excited to begin the second class, and will be sending announcements out soon regarding starting on May 22 (please note that date!)

Clinical Sites: Clinical sites continue to grow for our students. New sites are: Freeman Maternity Clinic and Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO, The Wesley Birth Center and a CNM/OB/GYN practice in Wichita, KS and the re-establishment of Samuel U Rodgers Community Health Center and Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, MO.

Our Chat Room: We would like to encourage everyone to look at the student "chat room" and use this as an opportunity to communicate with one another. The Intrapartum course will include assignments about anonymous cases that will require involvement in dialogue on this board. You might find this a great learning opportunity, regardless of the class you are in.
