July 2003

Class 03 is near the end of their program of study. Five students will complete their Nurse Midwifery education and begin new professional career opportunities. Following are some highlights of the last few months and new avenues the program faculty and students are undertaking.

  • Class 03 Completion Celebration will be held at KUSON in the Atrium on Saturday July 26th at 4:00 PM. Susan Murphy Cohen, Kay Garman, Terrah Pendarvis, Hatsie Mallicoat and Angel Schmutz will be recognized as completing graduates and celebrate with their friends, faculty and preceptors the achievements of the past two years. Please come and enjoy this crowning event of their academic pursuits.
  • Class 04 is completing their Summer Antepartum course. A retreat was held in mid-May introducing them to the Nurse Midwifery Track and taking on the Student Nurse Midwife Role. We welcome Kyanna Shelar, Bridget Robinson (KUSON), and Cara Busenhart (UMKC) to class 04.
  • Class 05 continues to grow with excited applicants and prospective students. We anticipate notification to incoming students by August and hope for 5-6 full time students in this class.
  • Late August or early September is tentatively scheduled for an evening of fun, relaxation and introduction for students in Class 04 and 05 to meet. Mentorship, encouragement, and “insider” sharing is always a component of this get-together. Stay posted for an invitation to a wonderful relaxed evening at Ginger’s home.
  • The annual meeting in Palm Desert brought together many opportunities to learn, share stories, and network. Representatives from all classes of KU’s program were present. Barb Parker (01), Suzanne Bentley (02) Terrah Pendarvis and Susan Cohen (03) and Kyanna Shelar (04) were all in attendance. The Friends of KU party during the annual meeting also included preceptors and faculty.
  • KS HETC continues to grow and build as the final quarter of year one nears. Sites in Sterling, KS, Wichita, KS, and Topeka, KS affiliated with CNM’s serve as centers for multidisciplinary centers of education in vulnerable populations. We will expand these clinical sites in the coming year. In addition, Harmon and Schlagel high schools will be joining with KU Midwifery for student enrichment and job shadowing kids into health careers. Denise Fryzelka, CNM is the project director of KS HETC.
  • KU Faculty Practice will begin in July! Friday afternoon clinics will be established within the KU OB/GYN dept for primary care/well woman exams initially. OB patients will be added as additional FTE’s are hired and credentialed. This landmark achievement will be publicized widely!
  • Check the ACNM website frequently. Stay in contact with your legislators and legislative agendas put forth by our ACNM Staff. Encourage others who support you to support the legislative agendas as well. We need everyone to be politically involved with a recognized voice, your e-mails are VITAL! www.midwife.org
