The following are some exciting events to report on related to the midwifery education program, current students and alumni.

50th Annual ACNM meeting: Washington D.C. June 11-16th. This is a meeting to make sure you attend. The history of midwifery in America will be celebrated with some very exciting events. Please see the ACNM website for more information and registration at www.midwife.org KU will be represented on the 50th quilt, and in the 50th anniversary slide show with many photos and antics of our great students and alumni.

Current Students Scholarships:

  • At the 10th annual Midwife Means: With Woman conference March 4th and 5th, sponsored by ACNM Region V-18, Ina May Gaskin was featured as the keynote speaker. Student scholarships were awarded to attending KU students Torri Washington (class 05) and Julie Smith (class 07). Congratulations to both!
  • Integration experiences: will be beginning for class 05 with the following locations secured for students: Talequah, OK; Topeka, KS; Joplin, MO; and, Rockford, IL. Barb Parker (class 01) will be precepting an Integration student from KU midwifery for the first time. Thanks Barb!
  • 2005 Midwifery Completion Ceremony: Class 05 is beginning to plan their Midwifery completion ceremony to be held on July 30th, Saturday afternoon, at the Sage Femme Birth Center in Kansas City, KS owned by Cathy Gordon, CNM (class 02). Mark your calendars now to come and support the graduating midwives!

Incoming Students

  • We currently have six incoming students to the KU Midwifery program. Five students are from KUSON and 1 from WSU. The students will begin the midwifery core with Primary Care of Women in spring 2006 and graduate in spring of 2007. Welcome!

Midwifery Alumni

  • Terrah Pendarvis (class 03) has accepted a new position with Women’s Care in Overland Park, KS. She is leaving her private practice position in Junction City, KS that she pioneered and began. Plans are on the horizon for a wedding the first week of July. Congratulations!
  • Kyanna Kuntz (class 04) has accepted the position Terrah Pendarvis is leaving in Junction City, KS. Kyanna will begin in early May. She is leaving a volunteer midwifery role at Fort Riley, Kansas military hospital and part-time employment at the Topeka Birthing Center.
  • Annette VanAnne (class 01) has accepted a new FNP/CNM position with a hospital and family practice physician in Girard, KS. This will be the first CNM/Family Medicine practice in Southeast Kansas. A health fair announcing the new collaboration is being held on April 9th!
  • Kay Garman (class 03) accepted a new FNP/CNM position in Norton, KS, leaving the first rural midwifery practice she established in Phillipsburg, KS and moving north to establish another full scope practice! Phillipsburg is looking for a replacement...
  • Bridget Robinson (class 04) gave birth to a beautiful baby boy in Trenton, MO on March 10th at 9:41 PM. Thomas Benton Robinson weighed 8 lbs 2 oz and was 19 ¼” long. Congratulations to Bridget and her family! (See photo updates for spring 2005).
  • Cathy Gordon (class 02) will open the first Freestanding Birthing Center in Kansas City, KS this spring at 31st and Minnesota in Wyandotte County. She is also planning an international mission trip to Kenya in October. Liz Itote (class 05) and native Kenyan will be traveling with Cathy.
  • Heidi Wade (class 01) has been working with KU Midwifery students (class 05) at the Talequah Indian Nation hospital/clinic in Talequah, OK. Thanks Heidi!
