April 2003
What is new? Many events have passed since the last posting. Class 02 completers successfully ended their midwifery course of study and national board exams, while Class 03 and Class 04 students continued their pathway of education to bring more CNMs to the Midwest.
- Evaluation: The Nurse Midwifery Education Program Evaluation Committee represented by program faculty, staff and Suzanne Bentley (Class 02) Susan Cohen (Class 03) and Kyanna Shelar (Class 04), are busy drafting a proposal to present to the KUSON faculty for changes in the nurse midwifery program of study. Goals include reducing duplicative course content and total number of credit hours; and rearranging program layout for completion of study to coincide with June national ACC board exams.
- Integration: Class 03 has been very busy working on preparation for integration this summer. The five students will be relocating to Ada, OK, Joplin, MO, Denver, CO, and Lincoln, NE for their 10 week integration experience. Excitement and anticipation of this capstone experience fills the hallways and classroom!
- ACNM National Meeting is in Palm Desert, CA beginning the end of May through the first week of June. Faculty, students and alumni are preparing for many activities and experiences. Terrah Rothfuss (Class 03) is leading KU in a “Bake Cake Off” team to raise money for the ACNM foundation. Terrah, Susan Cohen (Class 03) and Kyanna Shelar (Class 04) will be representing KU Nurse Midwifery students at many student sessions. Ginger Breedlove will be inducted as the new ACNM Board Secretary for a three year term.
- Class 03 has planned their completion ceremony to be held at KUSON Atrium on Saturday, July 26th in the afternoon. We hope as many students as possible will be able to come and assist in hosting this special day for their graduating classmates in the wonderful tradition that has evolved. Greater KC Chapter V-18 of the ACNM has provided financial support for this event.
- Scholarships: Three KU Nurse Midwifery students received $500 scholarships at the V-18, 8th annual “Midwife Means with Woman” conference in April. Congratulations to Hatsie Mallicoat (Class 03), Angel Schmutz (Class 03) and Kyanna Shelar (Class 04). We hope this will help support their professional growth in nurse-midwifery.
- KUSON Nurse-Midwifery Faculty Practice at KUMC is progressing slowly. We hope to begin providing Friday afternoon patient clinics at KU OB Department in May/June and have an anticipated first “birth” at KUMC in the early fall. Stay tuned for more details.
