The 50th ACNM annual meeting was held in Washington D.C. June 11-16th. The KS Contingency consisted of: Cathy Gordon (02), Terrah Pendarvis (03), Samantha Nardella (05); Preceptors: Debra Wolfe, Denise Fryzelka; and KS Midwives Sally Prickett, Cassie Blakely. The KS Delegation stormed the hill lobbying to Congress about Medicare Reform. Personal meetings were held in every Congressional Office. See photo of KS with Senator Pat Roberts below.

2005 Completion Ceremony
Held on July 30th in Lied Auditorium, five master’s students celebrated completion of their Nurse Midwifery studies. Students included: Catrice Brantley, Jayme Burford, Liz Itote, Samantha Nardella, and Torri Washinton. Over 75 friends, family members, alumni, current students and preceptors were present to congratulate each student. Job placements include practicing in: Overland Park, KS, Illinois, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Kansas City, KS.

Current Students
The incoming class (07) will begin as a formal Midwifery group in January 2006. Graduate students include: Julie Smith, Terri Jones, Gail Mayberger, Jenny Swanson (WSU), Denise Nickel and Melissa Curtice. Post Masters Students to date include: Jennifer Johnson, Katy Weir and Tammy Meizel. We look forward to the next midwifery class with anticipated graduation in spring 2007.

Piloting New Education Techniques
Beginning in January 06, the Nurse Midwifery courses will be enhanced with increased Internet learning as well as in-class lectures with distance teaching capabilities. As three of the post-masters students live in rural Western Kansas, new methods to provide educational opportunities are being explored. Stay Tuned!

DNP Doctorate of Nursing Practice
KUSON is involved in on-going dialogue about the new AACN document promoting the credential of DNP to all practicing advanced practice nurses by 2015. The ACNM has created a special educational summit to be held in D.C. in September, 06 in order to draft a white paper response to this emerging requirement for the APN. Other Practice News & Happenings
Babies are being born at Cathy Gordon’s Sage Femme Birthing Center in Kansas City, KS. Denise Fryzelka, preceptor, is flying frequently to Haiti to consult with midwives at Maison de Naissance birthing center. Ft Riley, Irwin Army Hospital has approved contracts for students to attend births with staff CNM’s.
