Winter 2006

Greetings and Happy New Year to All!

In 2007 with the spring semester, seven midwifery students will be completing many activities in preparation for graduation of the KU Midwifery Program. Updates for current students and alumni follow:

  • 2007 Integration Placements: Students will be completing their capstone course in many areas throughout the U.S. including: Overland Park, Topeka, Junction City and Wichita, KS, Talequah, OK, and, Warrensburg and Kansas City, MO. With many new Integration sites, we are excited to bring new Preceptor faculty into the KU Midwifery program and expand resources for CNM’s to be involved in midwifery education as well as diversity in student experiences. Thanks to all KU Alumni who have or will be continuing to participate as preceptors!

  • Conference News: The 12th Annual Greater Kansas City, Region V-18 conference will be held March 9/10th, 2007 in Overland Park, KS at the Lawrence Edwards Campus. Friday will include an all day first-assist/cesarean workshop (limited registration) and Saturday will include a full day of CE/CME on current topics in obstetric and gynecologic women’s health. Please set these dates aside as many midwifery student scholarships are given for attendance through random drawings from the local chapter. We need VOLUNTEERS to help staff the registration table from KU Midwifery program on Friday evening and Saturday morning. Please contact G Breedlove if interested in helping us save $$ by staffing this ourselves.

  • The 51st annual ACNM meeting will be held in Chicago, IL from May 25 – 31st. Please strongly consider attending this meeting as a student interested in professional growth and to learn timely issues regarding the profession and clinical issues. See ACNM website for current information about the meeting
    http://www.midwife.org/

  • ACNM Student Scholarships applications are available on-line through the ACNM Foundation. PLEASE consider applying whether you are in the current midwifery track or in master’s courses preparing for the midwifery program. All students qualify for these scholarships. Many KU midwifery alumni have received these funds! You can find more information at the following website http://www.midwife.org/support.cfm?id=270
Deadlines for student scholarships is March 16th, 2007. Don’t wait!

  • ACNM DOA re-accreditation site visit: The KUSON Midwifery program has submitted request for re-accreditation of our program. Our initial accreditation was from 2002-2007. Two Division of Accreditation site visitors will be visiting KUSON from March 27 – 29, 2007. We are asking that ALL students who can be available to meet with site visitors be aware of these dates and make every effort to be available to personally meet with the visitors. We will have a schedule soon and can verify the exact date/time this meeting will occur and let you know. This is a required component of our visit, so we need as many students as possible on campus to meet independent of faculty to answer questions and share information about our program. Thanks to all in advance!

  • ALUMNI Updates: Suzanne Bentley (Class 02) is working with Dr. Sharon Lee at KUMC assisting with Antepartum visits and Mom/Baby discharges for births at KU. She is hoping for full privileges soon. Susan Cohen (Class 03) is back in town working at UMKC as the OB faculty for the BSN program. Barbara Parker (Class 01) delivered her 1,000 baby since graduation in December. Jean ‘Ann’ Wright (Class 03) has been appointed to the Kansas Board of Nursing Advanced Registered Nurse Practice Committee.

  • Legislative News: ACNM continues to work for equitable Medicare reimbursement and has strong hopes for a successful conclusion to this long battle in 2007. See ACNM Legislative Alerts at http://www.midwife.org/legislative.cfm.
Terrah Pendarvis-Stroda, CNM (class 03) is the Chapter Legislative Chair for KS/MO and frequently sends out messages for action. If everyone responded to these calls, our Congressional leaders will listen! Please stay tuned in to professional legislative issues.
