The primary focus of this program/track is the care and management of well women's primary and reproductive health care needs throughout the life span. The Kansas Nurse-Midwifery Education Program was established in 1999 at The University of Kansas (KU) School of Nursing and is accredited by the American College of Nurse-Midwives, Division of Accreditation, 8403 Colesville Rd, Suite 1550, Silver Springs, MD 20910-6374. Phone 240-485-1800. This midwifery program educates nurse-midwives to serve low risk childbearing women, their families and neonates. Preference is awarded to qualified program candidates from underserved health areas or other areas with critical maternal/infant indicators such as low birth weight.

The nurse-midwifery program is composed of three cores: (1) a General Graduate Core, (2) an Advanced Practice Core, and (3) a Nurse-Midwifery Specialty Core. The Nurse-Midwifery Specialty Core is the capstone core and builds upon the first two cores.

Admission Requirements

Master of Science in Nursing – Nurse-Midwifery Major (The KU School of Nursing)
Application requirements include:

  1. Application form
  2. Official academic transcripts
  3. Personal statement of career goals and objectives
  4. Three letters of reference from individuals who can substantiate your clinical expertise and commitment to maternal/child/women’s health
  5. Licensure as a registered nurse in one state or territory of the United States - Before starting on the midwifery core courses, students will need verification of current nursing licensure in both Kansas and Missouri.
  6. Completion of accredited baccalaureate program in nursing, with GPA of B or above
  7. At least one year of work experience as a nurse (preferably maternal/child, or women’s health)
  8. College level physical assessment course
  9. Graduate level statistics course
  10. Personal interview with nurse-midwifery education program director or designee/s if requirements #1 to #9 above are met

Post-Masters Certificate Program

This option is for candidates who have already earned a masters degree in nursing. A prerequisite is completion of an Advanced Practice Core, including courses in Advanced Health Assessment, Advanced Pathophysiology, Health Promotion and Complementary Therapeutics, and Applied Drug Therapy, or their equivalents. Application requirements include:

  1. Application form
  2. Official academic transcripts
  3. Personal statement of career goals and objectives
  4. Three letters of reference from individuals who can substantiate your clinical expertise and commitment to maternal/child/women’s health
  5. Verification of current nursing licensure in both Kansas and Missouri
  6. Personal interview with nurse-midwifery education program director or designee/s if requirements #1 to #5 above are met

Collaborative Program with the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of Nursing and Wichita State University (WSU)
This option is for masters students only. These students must complete the application and admission process at the UMKC School of Nursing or WSU, and also apply as nurse midwife certificate students at the KU school of Nursing.

Please note, this program/track is not accredited as a post-baccalaureate, stand-alone certificate option.
