The  image analysis component of the  core provides computerized facilities for digital acquisition, analysis, and printing of images obtained from biological specimens. Imaging and printing equipment and software is housed in 317 square feet of space in room 1018 of the Smith MRRC building.Investigators can obtain low magnification images directly by scanning histological slides with a Polaroid SprintScan 35 Plus. For higher magnification requirements, 35mm negatives can be scanned with the SprintScan, and photographic prints digitized using and Agfa Arcus II flatbed scanner. Images from ethidium bromide stained gels are acquired using a Kodak DC120 digital camera with an UV illuminator. Members can acquire images using core equipment, or transfer them to HIAC computers via the network.
Image analysis and image processing for publication and presentation is accomplished using two computers linked to the internet that are housed in the image analysis laboratory. Both Apple Macintosh, and Microsoft Windows platforms are supported, with various image editing, analysis and composition software installed on both Power Macintosh G3, G4 and Pentium II computers. Pictures may be printed to the Fuji Pictrogaph 3000 or to a high resolution Epson Stylus 800, and 1520 inkjet printers. Large format poster layouts may be compiled for off site printing.Don Warn and Patrick Moonasar may provide instruction and training to investigators and laboratory personnel in all aspects of digital image acquisition and processing, and in the care and use of the core equipment. The staff is also available to acquire images, quantitate images, and perform page layout for poster presentations and artwork composition.Services are available at various pricing structures for MRRC members and  non-members.
