Residency Program

Our Program

Welcome to the University of Kansas Pediatrics Residency Program!

We are delighted that you have decided to take a look at our program. This is a department where we have an equal commitment to patient care as well as to families, students, residents, and each other. It's an environment where everybody is encouraged to learn and everyone is encouraged to be inquisitive.

Below are just a few of the reasons that make the residency program at KU Pediatrics unique. Explore our pages further to find detailed information on the educational, clinical, and research experiences provided by our program, as well as information on resident life from our residents themselves.

Our Faculty

The faculty are here because of their commitment to education. They are innovative, and try new methods to improve teaching of residents and students. With the increased size of the faculty and recent recruitment, we have a good balance between experienced senior physicians and young, newly trained faculty, with native Kansans as well as physicians from around the country and around the world.

Personal Touch Of A Small Program

Because the program is small, the residents' strengths can be enhanced and the weaknesses can be improved in a setting that is flexible for individual learners. There is great flexibility in planning elective rotations to address individual educational, clinical, and research goals. The learning style of each resident is considered individually, and the program directors and the chair spend a great deal of time making sure that each resident has an individual learning plan and career plan tailored to the individual resident.

Training Diversity Of A Large Institution

KU Pediatrics has the advantage of being a pediatric department within a large state academic institution. It provides lots of resources to help with child health beyond just those available to children who can get to the medical center here. We have the Halloween 2009 ability to train residents at both ends of the age spectrum, from a busy neonatal service to growing transitional care areas for young adults with conditions such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, and congenital heart disease. With the growing department and more sub-specialists, the education that is provided is more expansive and complete than ever.

Collegial Relationship Between Residents and Faculty

At KU Pediatrics, there is a friendly and supportive, collegial working relationship between residents and faculty. Some programs tend to see residents as someone to get the work done, but here, it's a balance of size and commitment where students and residents are treated as colleagues within the continuum of their level of training.

A Flexible Program

Our educational focus is the core of our academic program and so we spend a lot of Several residents volunteered to man the health tents during the 100th
Anniversary of Boy Scouts Camp Out time and thought to always making it better. Residents can help mold change as needed within the program. Residents' voices are heard in all areas from program improvement to recruitment to faculty development.

Community Outreach

Another strength of the program is that we provide residents with ways to be a part of and to serve the nearby community, as well as to serve the international community. KU is a leader in outreach programs, so rural health and issues related to access to health care are very relevant. There is also financial support available for residents wishing to participate in international medicine electives.
