Welcome From The Program Director

Welcome to KU Pediatrics! As a native Kansan and a product of the University of Kansas School of Medicine and Pediatrics Residency Program, I am truly excited that you have decided to take a look at our program.

Pediatrics is a rapidly changing field full of opportunities as well as challenges on an increasingly global stage. Your training at KU Pediatrics will prepare you to handle both in whatever career you eventually choose. The mission of the Department of Pediatrics is to optimize the health, development, and well being of children and their families through excellence in patient care, education, research and operations. We are committed to providing family centered, quality care to each child and family. Additionally, we strive to serve children in a way that meets their diverse social, economic, educational, and cultural needs.

To guide you through residency training is our growing and dedicated faculty. An influx of new faculty, general pediatricians and pediatric subspecialist alike, has invigorated our teaching, mentoring, research and clinical activities. Seeking to strengthen every aspect of our educational program, faculty and residents work together to create a learning environment that is dynamic, challenging, supportive and rewarding.

Opportunities for research, international experiences, and flexible rotations provide flexibility to meet individual professional and personal goals. A variety of new and innovative teaching methods are utilized to meet residents' various learning styles. In addition to new faculty, we have a new outpatient clinic set to open in July 2011, an inpatient EMR with COPE with outpatient expansion scheduled for the fall of 2011, and plans are underway for several major inpatient remodels. The Inpatient Pediatrics Unit and PICU renovation will centralize these units into a dedicated pediatrics area while the NICU renovation will allow for expansion of that busy clinical service.

On top of all that is changing at KU Pediatrics, Kansas City is simply a wonderful Midwestern city in which to live, work, and raise a family. Kansas City is a playground for lovers of sports, music, theater, and the arts as well as the great outdoors.
