Applying

Application Criteria

  • We only accept applications through ERAS. Any applications received via fax, email or mail will be shredded
  • Preference will be given to applications received by December 15.
  • We do not currently have policies regarding minimum USMLE/Comlex scores, number of attempts, years since graduation or US clinical experience.. We consider all aspects of the candidate’s application.
  • Each application must contain at least:
    • three letters of recommendation.
    • Receipt of passing both Step I and Step II and ECFMG certification (if applicable) before February 15.
  • We do accept ECFMG sponsored J-1 Visas (alien physician). All visa and ECFMG certificates must be current for a July 1 start date.

  • KU Pediatric Residency does not offer observerships or externships.
  • If you are an international medical student who is interested in doing a rotation, please contact the international programs office.
  • If you are a US medical student interested in doing a rotation, please contact the registrar's office.

Interview: What to Expect

  • You will have a "host" resident who will be with you during the entire interview process. Your host resident will contact you several days before your interview. Please plan to arrive in Kansas City prior to 4pm the day prior to your interview and not leave until at least 2pm on the interview day.
  • Sample schedule of the interview (all sessions of the interview are required, including the dinner)
    • 6:30 pm: Dinner with residents
    • Start time will differ per day of the week: Residency conference
    • Interviews: Program Director and Department Chair plus 2 additional faculty
    • Benefit session: discuss the benefits offered by KU Pediatric Residency
    • Tour of the facility
    • Lunch with current first year residents
    • 1:30 pm: Conclusion of the interview


  • We provide all out of town candidates with a hotel room for the evening prior to the interview day. Although we pay for the room, you will need a credit card for incidentals. You can also purchase additional nights at the hotel at a reduced KU rate.
  • You will have dinner with your host resident, other residents and other candidates the evening prior to your interview. This is REQUIRED and meant to be a casual time getting to know residents.
