About the Program

We are a mid-sized program, which currently consists of 25 Categorical Pediatric Residents. We are located in Kansas City, Kansas on the campus of the University of Kansas Medical Center, which is a nationally recognized academic medical center whose focus is on research, education, patient care and community service. The faculty who instruct here are all dedicated to the education of residents and medical students. Our program strives to not only educate, but also support our residents in any areas needed.

Locations

  • HC Miller Building: Located on the campus of the University of Kansas Medical Center, the Miller building currently houses the Pediatric Outpatient Clinics, General and Sub-Specialty Pediatric offices, Pediatric Administration and the Pediatric Medical Education Center (the “PMEC” is the center for pediatric residents and students)
  • Prairie Village Office: Our Prairie Village office is located in Johnson county and houses additional outpatient clinics. This office gives residents a chance to experience continuity and subspecialty clinics in an environment that is closer to a private practice atmosphere.
  • The University of Kansas Hospital: The hospital is located on the campus of the University of Kansas Medical Center and is where our residents spend much of their time. It houses the General Pediatric Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Full Term Nursery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
  • Community Locations: In addition to the KU Medical Center, our residents go out into the community at various locations during rotations. This not only allows us to serve the community in which we are located, but also allows our residents to become familiar with a variety of services and environments.

Clinical Experience/Rotations

  • Our residents get the experience they need to become successful pediatricians or to prepare them for fellowships. Not only are our rotations designed to meet the specifications of the ACGME, but also designed to be flexible to meet the needs of individual residents. We work with each resident to ensure they can get the exposure and hands-on experience in their desired subspecialties and procedures.

Didactic Experience/Conferences

  • Inpatient Morning Teaching Conference: (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 7:30 am) This conference consists of a resident case presentation and resident/student/faculty discussion.
  • Outpatient Morning Teaching Conference: (Wednesday mornings at 8:00 am) One Wednesday per month consists of a mock code and the rest of the Wednesdays consist of a case presentation or frequently encountered outpatient medical condition and resident/student/faculty discussion.
  • Grand Attending Rounds: (Wednesdays at 12:00 noon) Faculty presented case presentations followed by open dialogue between faculty, residents and students.
  • Resident Core Curriculum Lectures: (Thursdays from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm) Faculty presented topics selected based on In-Training Exam results, ABP Prep or existing educational need.
  • Pediatric Grand Rounds: (Friday mornings at 8:00 am) Faculty or Guest Speaker presented lecture that focuses on a current pediatric topic of interest.
  • Friday Resident Conferences: (Fridays at 12:00 noon) Rotating Ethics, Morbidity & Mortality (M&M), Journal and Senior conferences. In Ethics, a ethical question is presented and discussed among faculty, residents and students. M&M, Journal and Senior conferences are presented by individual residents followed by a discussion and question session.

Board Preparation

  • We know that each resident is unique on how they learn. With that in mind, we provide a variety of resources for residents to prepare for the Certifying Exam for the American Board of Pediatrics. Each year we provide a lecture series on board preparation. Our residents have access to excellent test-taking preparation resources through the student center. The library in the Pediatric Medical Education Center is stocked with videos, computer software, question books and literature to assist resident in studying. We also provide each resident with an extra Board Preparation allowance of $1000, which allows them to pursue outside resources for board preparation.
