Instruction

KU Pediatric Residency Logo.

The Department of Pediatrics mixes instructional activities with clinical experiences to familiarize resident physicians with the full spectrum of pediatric care. There are informal study groups, formal lectures, individual discussions with faculty and peers, and interactions with patients and parents.

Morning Conference:

Morning report will become the responsibility of both the inpatient and outpatient residents. The residents required to attend morning report would be the urgent care residents and residents assigned to subspecialty rotations at KU and the floor team including the PICU. Attendance will be taken daily so that attendance at morning report can be included in attendance with other non-core conferences which is expected to be 60% for all residents. Faculty in attendance should include the general pediatric attending, the early morning urgent care faculty and the morning continuity clinic attending.

Work Rounds. The format will include the institution of subspecialty rounds on Tuesday and Thursday and the return of case presentations to one day presentations on Monday and Wednesday from the current two day format. The two seniors on the floor and the senior in urgent care will be responsible for the Monday and Wednesday conferences. These three seniors should set this schedule up at the beginning of the month and give it to the chief resident.

The monthly schedule for subspecialty attendings will be formulated in advance by the chief resident. Each subspecialty should have one of the 8 specialty days to present a case, discuss a patient or teach the residents. Specialty faculty will have no more than one day per month scheduled for their specialty morning report and the schedule will rotate to allow time for all specialists to participate. Specialty faculty will be expected to attend their scheduled specialty patient presentations unless they have traded their assignment with another faculty. Such trades should be reported to the chief resident. The general pediatric attending will work with the senior residents to make sure that the scheduled faculty attend the conference.

The schedule for the residents on the floor would be:

  • 8-8:45 am (begin promptly) — Morning Conference
  • 8:45-9:15 am — Consulting Senior would do PICU Rounds
  • 9:15 am-10:15 am — General Rounds
  • 10:15 am-10:30 am — Work time
  • 10:30am-11:30 am — Heme/Onc Rounds
  • 11:30 am-noon — Wrap up work and get post-call interns home

Because of the change in the format, Morning Report now will be called Morning Conference.

Grand Rounds and Grand Attending Rounds:

Grand Attending Rounds give faculty an opportunity to present in-depth discussions about patients. This is usually done as a multidisciplinary conference. Weekly grand rounds and grand attending rounds feature presentations by outside lecturers or faculty members from either the Department of Pediatrics or other departments within the Medical Center.

Radiology Rounds:

Every other week a pediatric radiologist reviews all recent interesting pediatric imaging studies.

Journal ClubJournal Club:

Each PL-1 resident leads this discussion once in which house staff and faculty discuss key journal articles from the pediatric and medical literature.

Mortality and Morbidity Conference (M&M):

Each PL-2 resident leads this conference once in which a patient admitted within the past few months is discussed.

Residents' Conference:

Discussion in the clinic. Each PL-3 resident prepares and presents a topic for discussion and instruction which provides an exercise in scholarship and critical thinking regarding the world literature in clinical pediatrics.

Ethics Conference:

Held monthly, our pediatric faculty presents the ethics curriculum and leads discussions regarding important ethical issues.
