What do I do for this PRIDE thing?

1. Pick a winner from the list of nominations:

  1. Do this by the end of the first or second day on service.
  2. Choose according to community service or school service. You have individual feelings of what a good winner is -- choose according to your own criteria of service.
  3. Choose a different school than used last month -- preferably one that has never won before.

2. Contact Randy Goldstein 917-3028 or Lisa Gilmer (Chief Resident) 917-3694 to alert the PRIDE Committee of your choice.

  1. Do this by the 5th of the month.
  2. Be prepared to tell why you chose the person you did.
  3. This is important -- A lot of paperwork starts once you have selected someone.

3. Write a letter congratulating the recipient, citing their individual merit:

  1. This should be done by the 14th of the month.
  2. You can use the Example letter or be creative and write your own.
    1. Please mention the "KU Pediatrics Department".
    2. Use the child's name in the letter.
    3. Explain what PRIDE stands for.
    4. Explain why he/she deserved this recognition.

4. Turn the letter in to Linda Schuck (in the Administration office) by the 14th.

5. While your letter is being typed on PRIDE stationary by the office staff you should select a prize.

  1. Pick a prize from the list of prizes or choose something in town that costs no more than $50.
  2. Examples include movie tickets (2), bowling passes (3-4), and circus tickets (2).
    1. It is better not to plan on something with a particular date. That way the child's family can plan to do the activity when it fits into their schedule. Thus, a circus that is on one day only is not an ideal prize.
    2. Try not to plan things during Chiefs games or large events in town (It becomes difficult to arrange transportation for the child) -- therefore Sunday afternoon activities are typically bad.
  3. Call Randy or Lisa Gilmer to "clear" the prize before getting it -- we must stay within our budget. The PRIDE Committee will give you money for the prize. Do not spend your own money for the prize -- you will not be reimbursed!!

6. Collect what  you will need from Linda Schuck's office -- planning is crucial.

  1. Do this by the 20th of the month.
  2. Shirt for child.
  3. Certificate to be given to Principal.
  4. Letter for child. You will need to sign it before presentation.
