The Award Presentation:

The awards ceremony is the culmination of all the hard work. The residents in our department actually enjoy attending the ceremony. It provides them with an increased sense of PRIDE. They sense the fun and excitement from the children and enjoy the feeling of having made a difference in the community. Some of our faculty participate attend the awards presentation. One has even dressed up as the "JayDoc" mascot!

The presentation is generally done in front of the child's class to promote the program, recognize the child in front of his/her peers, and allow PRIDE to touch as many people as it can. In some cases the principal chose to have a school assembly involving the entire school. It is essential that the presentation be made in front of peers. The goal of PRIDE is to have the winner feel proud of his/her accomplishments and have his/her peers wish to win the award too.

The K U Medical Center's mascot, the 'Jay Doc,' entertains the kids at an assembly. One highlight of our presentations has been the "JayDoc". The mascot entertains and interacts with the crowd. We have also taken a limousine to the school to take the child home with his/her family. The students at the school think this is incredible. Not only does the child leave a "star", but in a 14-seat limousine (the longest in Kansas City). The presentation itself is made by the resident who did the work that month -- a nice reward for the time spent.

The media, both print and television, attended our first three presentations. Pictures and articles have appeared in the Kansas City star, three neighborhood newspapers, a radio station, and three television stations, and the hospital newsletter. A separate newsletter is sent from our committee to participating businesses to keep them interested in the program. This attention adds to the goal of making the child feel proud of his accomplishments. It also gives positive attention to our pediatric department and hospital. Finally, it gives free advertising to the businesses donating prices. A local television show (FOX 4 Morning Show) has increased the media exposure even more. The morning after the presentation, the winner is invited to the television studio for a live interview on this morning news show. This not only increases the exposure of our residency program and hospital, but more importantly increases the recognition of those children who embody the principles of excellence and community service.
