Background information PRIDE is sponsored by the KU Children’s Center, a non-profit organization at the University of Kansas Medical Center, committed to recognizing children in the Kansas City area who have achieved excellence. The PRIDE program is administered by a volunteer group of pediatric residents who partner with area teachers and principals to reward children who have shown service to their school or community. Each month, a student from Wyandotte, Johnson or Leavenworth county is nominated, and during a surprise visit, the winner receives a letter of congratulations and a gift, such as Blades hockey tickets. The child and family are also driven home in a limousine. According to Randy Goldstein, DO, PRIDE’s founding pediatrician, "We hope to encourage a deserving child to continue being a positive and active member of the community. Working hard and attaining goals will become contagious. Kids will truly want PRIDE."

This month’s winner is Jane Doe. With the help of her parents, Jane has organized and run a diabetes fund-raiser at Pine Grove. Her principal, Cheryl Smith, says "I’m incredibly proud of her efforts, particularly what she has taught her fellow students about diabetes and living with it. She’s helped raise more than $1200 for the fight against diabetes.
