An Introductory Letter from the Founder of PRIDE:
Dear Pediatric Resident:I am thrilled by your interest in the PRIDE National Program. As presented at the 1999 AAP National Convention in Washington D.C., PRIDE (Pediatricians Recognizing Individuals Demonstrating Excellence) is a pediatric resident-run program whose goal is recognizing children in the community who achieve excellence in school and community service. My name is Randy Goldstein and I am the founder of PRIDE. As a pediatric resident in the Kansas City metropolitan area, I was interested in promoting a citywide effort to recognize children in our community for their academic and social achievements. With the recent media attention given to children demonstrating destructive and lethal activities (for example, the massacre in Columbine, CO) I believed the majority of children doing well were being overlooked. Realizing that acknowledging good behavior promotes continued success and encourages peers to engage in similar activity, I began laying the foundation of what is now a truly energizing and rewarding program. I had no idea that the PRIDE program would catch on so quickly and would cause such an exciting response from the schools, businesses, media, and citizens in our community. People are truly looking for a reason to donate, celebrate, and recognize the good in others. This program, which not only recognizes children but also your medical facility, gives people the opportunity to become mentors, to encourage positive roles in society, and most importantly to praise kids for doing well. I hope that you find the program as rewarding as we do at the K U Children's Center in Kansas City. Please shape the program to make it a success in your town. It's great to share PRIDE!
