What are the benefits of Healthy Hawks?

Our goal is to provide information to your family about making healthy changes to provide lifelong healthier habits. Benefits of participating in Healthy Hawks may include weight loss, healthier eating habits, increased exercise, more family time, and improved self-esteem.

Who can participate?

Children who are 3-17 years of age are eligible. Your doctor can tell you whether or not your child meets the criteria to participate.

How much does this program cost?

The cost of Healthy Hawks varies dependent on your insurance company. Please check with your provider or call us to help you determine what is covered.

Where do these clinic visits and group meetings take place?

All of your visits will take place in the Department of Pediatrics Outpatient Clinic at KU Medical Center at 3901 Rainbow Blvd. This clinic is located at the corner of Olathe and Cambridge.

Can my other children particiapte?

We encourage everyone to come and participate. This includes other children and other adults (grandmas, care providers, uncles, etc.). It is mandatroy that at least one parent come, but we hope everyone in the family will want to come and take part. Everyone is welcome at the groups and at the gym.

Why do we weigh everyone in the Healthy Hawks group (Stage 3)?

Healthy Hawks is a family-based program that promotes a healthy lifestyle for everyone in your family. To develop and/or maintain your family's healthy habits, it is important for you and your family members to keep track of basic health information such as weight and height. Furthermore, weight management is easier for your child if everyone is involved.

In order to measure everyone's weight quickly and start our group on time, we encourage you to come to the Healthy Hawks group 15 to 20 minutes earlier than our group starting time (usually 5pm on Mondays).

Is there transportation available to Healthy Hawks?

If you need transportation services, we may be able to provide this for you. Please contact us at least a couple of days in advance to arrange transportation. For example, please give us a call by Friday morning if you need transportation on the following Monday.

I’ve heard that Healthy Hawks involves the whole family. Does the parent need insurance as well?

Healthy Hawks does involve the whole family. However, the parent does not need to have insurance to participate. The cost of the clinic will depend on your child’s insurance. Please call (913) 588-6381 for more information on clinic. Currently, our group part of Healthy Hawks is free to those who would like to participate. However, if that changes, it would still be only the child that needs to have insurance.

The cost of the Healthy Hawks Clinic will depend on your child’s insurance. Please call (913) 588-6381 for more help on determining how much your insurance will cover. The Healthy Hawks Group is currently covered by a grant and is free to those who would like to participate.

What do I wear/bring to Healthy Hawks Group?

Each week at Healthy Hawks you and your child(ren) will be participating in physical activity led by a certified fitness trainer. You will want to wear clothes and shoes that are comfortable to play, run and be active in. All other equipment or materials needed for each session will be provided for you.

Where do I park when I come to Healthy Hawks Clinic? Weekly groups?

When you come to the Healthy Hawks Clinic, you should have a hanging parking pass to park in the parking lot directly outside of the pediatric offices that are located in Miller (on the corner of Olathe and Cambridge). Since weekly group sessions are in the evening, you may park in the Miller parking lot without a parking permit. For a map of the KU Med Campus, click here.
