The Behavioral Pediatrics Division comprises doctoral-level pediatric psychologists. Behavioral Pediatrics is an interdisciplinary field addressing physical, cognitive, social and emotional functioning and development as they relate to health and illness issues in children, adolescents, and their families.
Our program is designed to foster mental and physical health by using an interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of problems of childhood and adolescence. Using principles of behavior and the precepts of child development, we work with children and their families to improve family relations, help families cope with life stressors, and alter environmental factors to influence well being for children and their families.
The division is cognitive-behavioral in orientation with a focus on behavioral pediatrics. The pediatric psychologists emphasize the use of behavioral assessment techniques and empirically derived cognitive-behavioral treatment approaches. Emphasis is placed on the development and integration of behavioral and biomedical science and techniques to lower child mortality reduce disability and morbidity and promote optimum physical, behavioral and emotional development.
A broad range of behavior problems or problems associated with medical disorders are routinely treated in our Behavioral Pediatrics Clinics. These include:
Many of our patients are referred by their pediatricians, family doctor, or other pediatric specialists, although physician referrals are not required. However, such a referral may be required by your health insurance plan.
Patients are seen by appointment in the Pediatric Outpatient Clinic in the HC Miller Building at the University of Kansas Medical Center, at the KU Pediatrics - Prairie Village clinic at 7301 Mission Rd - Ste 300 (Building A). We also have outreach clinics at the Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Clinic, 346 Maine, Lawrence, KS and in Hayes, KS. To make an appointment, call our appointment secretary at 913-588-6323. (Fax 913-588-2253)
We request that parents complete several standardized assessment questionnaires prior to their initial appointment. If the problem of concern involves the school setting, we request that school records be provided and that the primary teachers complete separate standardized assessment questionnaires.
We will provide an initial behavioral assessment of the child and family at the time of the first appointment. From that assessment we will inform the child and parents of an initial diagnosis and treatment plan. If we can not be of service, we will assist you in finding appropriate resources.
The University of Kansas Medical Center is a major training institution for students from several disciplines. The faculty is responsible for training Psychology Doctoral students and Pediatric Residents, who accompany our staff in their clinics.
